Backup Camera Extra Loom + Override Question

Have a 2010 with the backup camera already, but this was in the glove box:



I'm pretty sure it's the backup camera loom that goes in the tailgate, since the tailgate was replaced.

The question is, what can I do with it? More specifically is there any way to use it for a NON-tacoma camera, with the existing wiring harness and stock mirror system?

Second question is, I'm not a fan of the backup camera only coming on when I'm in reverse- to wit, sometimes you want to pull forward until clear of something and, well that's hard to do in R. I swear that's the only reason, officer. So I'd like to splice in an override to force the camera and mirror on- been done? Wiring diagram?

Any other good camera modification threads? I plan to do a few things so probably best to see what others have done.

Keep looking around you'll probably find a cap for the camera wiring for when you take the tail gate off in there too.

 

So the OEM camera is 6v and I've seen several things about stepping down 12v to power it in a pre-2009, but nothing about putting an aftermarket camera on the OEM loom.

I'm guessing all the aftermarket cameras require 12v, so I'm thinking maybe I can put 12v across a 6v relay, tripping it with the OEM camera power and feeding it with the separate 12v source. I know you can double or step up 6v, but building boards and duty cycle problems just don't seem like something I want to mess with when there is readily 12v available. Anyone know if you can power an aftermarket cam with 6v?

The other question that I can't find an answer to is what is the view field of the OEM camera. Almost every aftermarket camera advertises 170º but if I saw something on the tailgate cam I can't find it again. Any ideas?

The rest of the plan is to spice into the wires and have a switch on + video feed (possibly + & - video) and power both cameras when the system is on, but only use the feed for one at a time to the stock mirror.

 

There are adapters being made to do all the things you mention, they just are not at market yet, they were at the electronics show last month, I'm still waiting on them too. Once they hit market my stereo guy will have them and so will I
