Towing with Deaver J66?

Just got word I got a job 1,800 miles away.
Gotta pack up and move.

I'm selling as much stuff as I can and traveling with just the bare essentials, but I do have a Harley Sportster I need to get over there with me.

I've got a Deaver J66 10-pack on the back of my truck with King resi shocks.

Am I being unrealistic thinking I can tow a small (4x8 or 5x8 single axle U-haul) trailer halfway across country with my motorcycle in the bed?

 

That shouldn't be a problem, you will just get a little worse gas mileage than normal.

 

i pulled a 6x12 full with a 400lb sport bike in the bed. i managed 11 or 12 mpg going from virginia beach to atlanta. the truck itself didnt give me any issues on hills, but beware of cruise control.

 

I think I got about 10mpg when I made that same move in the opposite direction back in '05 with my '01 Taco...expecting about the same.

I'm more worried about excessive sag in the rear.

I wouldn't do it. I moved from Nevada to Rhode Island and pulled a 5x8 trailer. I put in the OME Dakar HD pack and removed my J-66 pack right before the road trip. Those J-66 packs can't even handle a Home Depot open trailer.

 

Hmmm...don't want any more lift than what the Deavers gave me.

What about adding Timbrens?

My bike weighs about 500lbs
Trailer is 900lbs according to U-Hauls site
I'll have MAYBE 500lbs worth of stuff in it

I've hauled my bike in the back with the Deavers before...no issues.

I love the Deavers and don't want to change them out, and I really don't want to have to rent a big truck and trailer to tow my truck on if I can avoid it.

Timbrens would work for you I think. I slapped a pair on with the stock 4-leaf springs and the truck/trailer handles remarkably well despite the frame being on the Timbrens most of the time when trailered up.

Pop them on for your trip, then take them off. You just have to loosen the U-bolts enough to slip them under, then retorque the U-bolts.

 

My old Taco with deavers sagged baddd when I put my 1500# trailer on it.

My new Dakars barely squat with the trailer.

I would only use the truck as a last resort.

 

Ha I was waiting for someone to post that video of the idiotic fat hillbilly complaining about springs that are designed to flex...uh, flexing.

I've towed a 10' or 12' dump bed trailer loaded past capacity with drywall, scrap metal and other junk, and it sagged more than I would want for anything more than a short drive, but with much more weight than I'll be towing on my move.

Hmmm...

So far it's 50/50. Anyone reading this use a Deaver J66/Timbren combo?

Timbrens + trailer rental = $400
Truck rental + trailer rental = $1300

If I can tow a 6'x12' uhaul roughly 4000 lbs with my Deaver 8's and a 3.4L...your setup would be nothing. I went 1500 miles.

 

and a J59 is not a J66...
