Does anyone know if there is anything located under the center console? I was thinking of maybe cutting out the bottom under the carpet and putting a lock box flush with the bottom and laying the carpet over it.. Kind of a secret compartment if you will. I imagin there isn't much space under there.
    What are your thoughts?

Wow great write up. I did search but didn't come up with anything. From those pictures it looks like there is some space to work with. Im going to tear it apart and get measurements then start looking for boxes. I will update with pictures once i get back to my truck in a few weeks.

From the California Health & Safety Code:

"11366.8. (a) Every person who possesses, uses, or controls a false
compartment with the intent to store, conceal, smuggle, or transport
a controlled substance within the false compartment shall be punished
by imprisonment in a county jail for a term of imprisonment not to
exceed one year or pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170 of the
    Penal Code.
    (b) Every person who designs, constructs, builds, alters, or
fabricates a false compartment for, or installs or attaches a false
compartment to, a vehicle with the intent to store, conceal, smuggle,
or transport a controlled substance shall be punished by
imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170 of the Penal
Code for 16 months or two or three years.
    (c) The term "vehicle" means any of the following vehicles without
regard to whether the vehicles are private or commercial, including,
but not limited to, cars, trucks, buses, aircraft, boats, ships,
    yachts, and vessels.
    (d) The term "false compartment" means any box, container, space,
or enclosure that is intended for use or designed for use to conceal,
hide, or otherwise prevent discovery of any controlled substance
within or attached to a vehicle, including, but not limited to, any
    of the following:
    (1) False, altered, or modified fuel tanks.
    (2) Original factory equipment of a vehicle that is modified,
    altered, or changed.
    (3) Compartment, space, or box that is added to, or fabricated,
made, or created from, existing compartments, spaces, or boxes within
    a vehicle."

The key here is "with the intent to" If you have/make/install etc. just to be able to secure valuables etc. you should be okay, but check your States Codes etc. to be sure. It also would hurt to print and keep a copy of your States code in the vehicle.

It was just a cool idea that I could keep valuables or whatever I want in it. Im not a drug smuggler or anything like that. Maybe store some emergency cash in there or what not. Thanks for the advice though I had no idea there was a law like that. California has lots of crazy laws though. im not suprised at all

Dear lord I'm glad I didn't move to commiefornia when I was thinking about it...

To the OP, I pulled the carpet from the center console thinking that I had discovered some brilliant idea to hide a gun until a read a few threads on TW... Now I'm looking for a different alternative because apparently I'm not the only genius to wanna hide a weapon under a false bottom in the console. Sub'd to see any different ideas.

there is not much room between the inverter and console. i kinda had a hard time running the cable for my ipod thru the bottom of it. i’d say maybe 1/4” or so.

maybe 1/2”? defiantly not a couple of inches maybe on the very sides/edges, the inverter dose not go to the edges of the console but in the middle where it is there is not much room. i had to take it out to get the cable for my ipod started in a hole, and even after i bolted it back down it was hard to adjust the wire was hitting/ rubbing the inverter.

"... but check your States Codes etc. to be sure. It also would hurt to print and keep a copy of your States code in the vehicle."

After 30-years in law enforcement I've learned that most States have similar statutes and a lot of them model theirs after California's.

x2. also check the state codes/ statutes every 6 months to 1 year incase they change, don’t want to get a surprise that they changed when you get stopped.
