Oil change / engine clatter, normal?

I read a previous post that shed some light but I'm still not positive if I need to take some action.

I bought a used 2013 Tacoma v6 with like 4600 miles on it. It has run great.

Yesterday, about 7k miles, I had the oil changed. They used synthetic which I thought was good, but....

There is a clattering noise when in stop and go traffic when I am excellerating from say around 30. The sound goes away once I'm moving a bit faster but still. It's a sound I haven't heard and I'm rather concerned.

What I picked up in the other thread:
    -normal
    -use better gas
-double check levels and possible add some.
    -use heavier oil.

Also someone mentioned that the timing could possibly adjust itself?

    Thanks dudes.

Is it a ticking noise, or engine ping? The taco motor is noisy, tick tick tick tick.
If you think it's pre-detonation, try a higher octane gas and see if that fixes it.

I would definitely check oil level if you haven't already.

You have the V6, so the engine oil weight is 5w-30.

Most newer engines have knock sensors. To help prevent pre-detonation the computer will retard timing.

Yep ... Toyota tick. My 1981 had it ... my 2007 has it. :notsure: But it doesn't concern me.

Sounds more like a clack clack, Not like a higher pitched tick.

I feel like that automotive commercial where everyone is making random sounds. Lol

But it only happens when accelerating.

I'm not even sure I could recognize pre-detonation.

Hold everything ... I might have missed something. "Clack clack" not "Tick tick?" And it started after the oil change? Check oil level and check drain plug and oil filter for evidence of leak. If it needs oil, obviously add it. Hopefully no damage was done. Was service done by dealer? This is starting to sound wrong to me. :notsure:

The 5.7 liter v8 tundra engine, which is of the same engine family as the v6, does the tick too. I walked right by someone yesterday in a parking lot who started up his tundra (which didn't look like a work truck) and heard the familiar ticking clatter noise while it was just sitting there. As long as it doesn't get worse over time, I guess the noise is ok.

If it started soon after the change to synthetic, I would switch back to conventional oil.(Granted the oil was at the proper level)

Like previously stated. check the oil level, heck, I switched mine to synthetic with 141,000 miles, nary a problem...

If it is a 'clack clack', that is not good...

It's wasnt as harsh as a clack clack like the engine is beating itself up and about to freeze. I've heard that before!

But I drove it yesterday prob 150 miles.

Everything was back to norm! Good, but strange.

 Probably a one off. Could have been a little bad fuel or even a "confused" computer; they will adjust themselves. If it doesn't reoccur you should be gtg.

    clack is probably ping

these engines will sometimes ping a bit due to the higher compression and it is stated in the manual that some pinging is normal (it is) and ok (it is OK, it will never become too severe*) but to avoid the ping use 89 or higher octane

the taco really should be rated for 91 octane only, but the motor is tough enough to handle some ping and the knock sensors retard ignition before it gets brutal

*of course if you have bad gas, or an actual engine or control problem, get severe pinging fixed
