MAF Issues

Hey everyone,
I have a 2000 4Runner 3.4 and lately the CEL has been going on and off and I took it to the parts store and they told me that it was a throttle position sensor which in the past has always been a MAF sensor, but I'm not sure this time. When the CEL is not on and I first start it up and give it a tiny tap of the gas the truck hesitates then revs, which leads me to believe that it truly is the MAF sensor going bad. But once it's been running for a little while it's okay. And when the check engine light comes on it seems to not do it. I'm assuming that's the ECU telling the car to counteract the fact that it's running lean. Has anyone else had any experience with this? Is it my MAF sensor or could it be something else?

 

The 3.4L has a common problem with the throttle position sensor. Mine had the same issue. When I would step on the gas for a brief second it would act like nothing was happening. Then all of a sudden it would get going. This would freak me out because it felt like the engine had died and then it would be running again.

I'm not sure if there was ever a TSB issues for the problem though.

Did you ever get yours fixed or did you just ride with it?

 

Mine just started to do it before my truck was totaled so I never had a chance to fix it.

Update: I took the MAF sensor out this past Saturday and gave it a thorough cleaning. CEL is still not on but when I first start the truck when it's warm it seems to still hesitate if you give it a hard, quick punch of the gas. It'll hesitate then rev. But not if you ease into the gase. Wondering what this is. Every time a MAF sensor has gone bad on my truck the CEL comes on... Anyone have any other suggestions?
