I have a misfire, but it won't always trip CEL

    I have a '99 4runner that started misfiring on #3 at random times (generally after it has been warmed up, then turned off for an hour or so, and then when I start it again it will miss). Changed plugs, still misfires. But before I go and buy a coil pack, I want to make sure that is the issue. So I swapped #3 coil with #1, and have been waiting to see if the problem moved to #1 or stayed at #3. I get a misfire and shudder still but it won't give me a CEL to check code. It will miss for a few minutes and then go away, still, no code. Any tricks to making the CEL come on?
