I would first like to start off by saying how much I love TW for helping me out when I don't know a thing. Now on to the question :)

I recently purchased a used 2006 TRD Sport from a dealership and they only gave me one set of keys. I took a look at the keys and first of all the ignition key wasnt the OEM Toyota one but a knockoff it seems like. Second the unlock button on the key fob does not work what so ever.

So how can I fix the key fob? Or do i need to fix the antenna like below?

Here is a link to the Extending keyless entry range. Do we have an antenna like this?

Sorry I am all over the place.. Would just like to get this fixed

I like the link for extending the range,
Has anyone ever tried or thought about trying to use , let's say maybe a corolla key which is a fob & key combination. Try to get it cut and programmed for a Tacoma? Hope I make sense.

I 'll be glad when they start reducing the size of those key fobs. They are handy but are way too bulky.

Hahaha. It happened to me on a motorcycle forum. I stole it.

Sorry, back to topic at hand.

I have an alarm fob with separate key for my Tacoma & YJ, then another fob/key combo for wifey's car, house key, key to hitch lock.. Would love to reduce at least a key or two

I feel ya on that one…but I would like to know if you can get the combination key to program with a taco. Then I wouldn't feel as raped for just a single key to be made(unless its gonna cost $300+).

The key you have is likely a transponder key which is programmed specifically to start that vehicle. If you lose this key, or it becomes defective, you'll get a big bill to make a new key, as the vehicle transponder system will have to be replaced. It takes a master key to program another key (antitheft system design)

You should immediately have another MASTER key made. Maybe a locksmith specializing is autos. I had another dealer key made for my prerunner a couple years ago and it was $125.00 ($60 key, 65 labor)

For the key fob, search around on line; there should be a toyota fob available that can be field-programmed with instructions.

    Good luck.

    OC,
eBay has plenty of Toyota key fob combo blanks, I would assume they are all transponder keys that would have to be cut & programmed.
You guys are way smarter than I. I quests I wanted to know if it is even possible to do. Would any Toyota transponder type key work or is it something specific to a Tacoma?

I think you might have to go to a dealership to get new fobs made or possibly a locksmith might be able to help you out. Either way its not going to be cheap.

Working on that as we speak...but keep it hush hush ;)

Dude just buy a new one from eBay, or go back and tell them that it doesn't work and make them give you a new one...

eBay oem ones go from $10-70 depends where you look

I've seen toyota remotes on ebay.

What was wrong with just a key and a door lock/opener remote?
Seems to me that the new keys and remotes are expensive and un-needed, at least by me.
    I'm a curmudgeon though.

Here is the one I got after I bought my 05. The key FOB that came with the truck didnt work, the dealer replaced the battery in the old FOB and it didnt work, so they gave up on it. i found this one on Amazon. Its a little tricky to get it into programming mode, and you will look like a moron doing it, but with a little patience you can save some big time $ over going through a dealer. Mine has worked flawlessly for 5 months. Cant beat $ 29 shipped.

I had problems with my keyfobs on my 2006, one had a bad range, the other went swimming with me in a lake and was never the same. I sure wish my Tacoma keys were like my Camry key with the remote built in.

does anyone know if you can use the camry keys? I know on a lot of toyota vehicles they were interchangable - what about an L100 landcruiser key?

The key might be programmable, the key fob part is not. Different frequency

At this point, you've got nothing to lose. Open it up and see if you can clean the contacts, maybe with a Q-tip dampened with alcohol. Sometimes the contacts get damaged from people pressing too hard on the button, or dirt getting inside. I've got the same key fob in the photo with my '09. It's not a transponder chipped key.
