So working on hooking up some back up lights and wanted to know if anyone knew which wire in the engine bay would be the correct wire to hook up the relay to. This would be to use less wire and keep the relay in a drier more protected area.

    Thanks again for the help

Red wire with a white stripe IIRC. Found it in the driver's kick panel on my truck. Don't think it runs through the under hood area. Might be able to find it at the tranny, but then you are tapping wires in a wet area. I would avoid that.

thanks for the help guys, the red wire with the white strip is it, tested it with my volt meter... my only other question is when hooking the relay to a switch the wiring harness and the back up lights how do i use the two remaining pins to go to those 3?

I have a 1st gen. I tried this and threw a code, but I also just hooked up my rear aug lights to my bachup lights. Now, if I hooked the lights up with a relay, would it work without having a code come up? Also, would these diagrams work with the 1st gen too? Thanks.

yea these wire diagrams arent going to work with a first gen

what i ended up doing is using a 4 pin bosch type relay
    [IMG]

i wired mine just like this, but i ran the reverse light wire (oem) with the switch output to the 86 pin

Yup, this is how I have them wired up now, but I thought it be kinda nice to be able to have them wired to the backups, via an on-off-on switch, so I could also turn them on manually when I want to. I'm just not sure if it would wind up throwing a code like I did before.

what ur going to want to do is put a diode in between the oem reverse lights wire and where u join them to the switch... stops back feeding into the factory harness that might solve ur problem

Cool, thanks. So what size diode though, do I just solder it in?

a 3 amp diode from radioshack should work try to keep the solder from the diode itself and heatshrink it tight

Not sure why you are throwing a code. What was the code? The idea of a relay is to take the load off the factory reverse light switch and keep it from burning up. Others have tried direct tapping into that circuit and had no issues. I use relays on everything.

We were just talking about how to trigger one relay with multiple sources here:

Well, wasn't a code, but the "check engine" light came on. I had to reset it, remove all the wiring, and I haven't had a problem since.
