Some of you may have seen this already but I thought it was worth sharing.

There is a fair amount of consistent buzz and interest in off-road trailers. I totally get it. I started day dreaming about building a trailer at least 15 years ago. After 8 years I finally built one and it's been one of the best things I've ever done to help me enjoy offroading/camping with my family. But there are a lot of things to consider before diving into a trailer project. There is definitely something to the "cool" factor of a trailer, I can't deny that. That is part of what gets people excited to build/modify one. But having a trailer can bring some challenges along with it, not to even address the expense that can grow quickly if you're not careful.

Anyway....I won't get too long winded with this but I wanted to share this article that I think is very well thought out and addresses a lot of the pros/cons of a trailer and can help anyone decided if it's worth it.

Making me want one! Haha Maybe 5-10 years down the road when I get my camping setup figured out and settled I'll try and build one. Would be a fun project!

They're insanely expensive if you buy one. So I figure I'll just wait until I get my truck finished and completely set up to see if there really is a need for me to make one.

Wow that's nice! But way overbuilt underneath adding a lot of weight. I don't need it to be able to mob over whoops like Jerry's haha

ya I agree. I just want a trailer where I can put my things and have my tent on top. So I can leave it at camp and not worry. But then again you have a nice trailer people would want...

Theres a guy who lives right beside me who has 3 of the old military trailers. One for camping, one for hauling and one that just has a bunch of wood in it. It looks ridiculous when he tows them with his stock height wrangler. Nose down ass up.

Great article, and post. Totally agree about that expense thing, and don't think there is anyway to predict it until you get started and then it just keeps growing.....

Before I purchased my Tacoma took a break from owning pickups and had an Xterra for 5 years. Missed the bed right away the inside of the X is tiny, so picked up a Little Giant trailer to make up for it.

    trailercamping_zpsb5de7075_66866e39927020b3b0d7749d0a4ea49f3ee899a6.jpg

The night after that picture was taken a bear tried to get into the trailer. I know better but left dog food in the trailer and the bear spent more than a minute smacking and digging at the trailer knocking it back a few feet. Always chock your wheels! The dog barking and going crazy didn't deter him and the sound of his claws on the galvanized steel created quite a racket but he didn't seem to mind. The trailer is based on a Ford Ranger extended bed and took me almost a year but found a utility topper for it which I adapted using the T-slots on top of the trailer and wood to make it more secure.

So now with a topper on the truck too the tongue is short enough that I have to extend it to prevent the toppers from smacking into each other on steep dips. And the Reese hitch has a LOT of limitations. Knew I was going to get a Tacoma so waited until I did to put matching wheels and tires on the trailer. But with a torsion axle that isn't quite so easy, it may be time to redo the suspension and use leaf springs? And the list goes on. But no regrets it works for me and the areas I go with some limitations. As mentioned in the article it really is an anchor when you hit a section that the beavers have damned and flooded.
