I have a 05 trd sport, just got it used with 84000 miles, I get the typical growling / humming noise that comes from a failed bearing when driving, however the noise and vibration goes away with 4x4 engaged, any ideas? I bought an extended service plan so I think its covered, but if its easy enough and cheap ill just do it myself just so I don't have it sit in the shop for however long.

The bearings fail on these things frequently, so that'd be where I start. There are a couple people on here that have done a lot of the work for us and sell complete assembled bearings that make the job 100x easier to do on your own now, so that'd be the route I'd take.

You got a link? I was told tacomas were bulletproof practically, starting to think not so much, what else should I expect to break?

The post above me has one of the links I was referring to. These are very, very well-made trucks, but like anything mechanical, they will break sometimes. The wheel bearings are a common issue (lost 1 @ about 40k miles, no issues with either since, and now I'm @ 120k). That being said, don't lose faith in the quality of your truck just yet.

While wheel bearing failure is common, when a bearing type growl goes away in 4wd, look into this. Watch the vid.

Took it to the dealership, they said driver side wheel bearing, noise goes away in 4hi, the tech showed me how rough the wheel was rolling when in the air, got an appointment tomorrow to have it replaced under warranty, hope its that.

Think its the diff bearing, dealer put new wheel bearing, still have noise that goes away in 4, dealer says its the diff but said they are not equipped to do the work lol, got an appointment at ford, lol I know...ford, but they said they can fix my diff, if they can't do it under warranty, may do it myself, is the bushing job all that hard? Saw videos and seems simple.

dont lose faith in your truck like said earlier its mechanical it will wear out eventually and these trucks are pretty bullet proof although small things do need to be replaced every now and then. im fortunate enough to have 160k miles on the truck and nothing has gone wrong,

It is pretty simple. If you can r+r a CV shaft, you should have no trouble.
