It should say so on your oil cap, IIRC either 5w20 or 0w20.

    See attached...

    2011 V6 can use 5w30, 5w20, or 0w20.

Select based on your climate... lighter oil for colder climates, heavier for hotter climates.
If running 5w20 or 0w20, I would run only a quality synthetic such as Mobil-1 or Amsoil. Royal Purple is junk.

I'll think I'll try the Synthetic Mobil 1 5w20. I'm in Atlanta so it's pretty hot. Will read the specs on 0w20 and decide between the 2. Whichever one it will be synthetic all the way.

    Thanks...

Personally, I'd run 5w30 for summer in Atlanta and maybe drop to 5w20 for winter.
I run 5w30 year-round here in Los Angeles.

If you look at the temperature chart for 5W20, 5W30, 10W30 and 10W40, there is significant overlap for most applications. 5W30 tend to cost the least.

Carmakers nowadays use 0W20 in EPA testing to eck out an extra 1-2 mpg. Thereafter 0W20 becomes "required". The 2011 Taco V6 Prerunner is advertised with 15/19 mpg city/hwy. The 2012 Taco V6 Prerunner is advertised with 16/21 mpg, even though there are no tech advances in the engine.

EPA doesn't care about the weather.
Manufacturers don't care about the weather as long as the engine makes it through warranty.
My company car in 2007 (Ford Exploder) used 0w20

On the upside though, 0w20 is, AFAIK, only available in synthetic, which provides better film retention and thermal stability than a conventional oil of the same weight.
5w40 synthetic performs comparably to 15w40 conventional in Diesel engines, but provides for better cold-start protection.

Personally, I stick with 5w30 though, but I don't own a vehicle with less than 65k on it.

If only 0w20 could get 1-2 mpg more that would be great but that isn't the case.

I took a look at the 2011 vs 2012 tacomas and ONLY the v6/6-speed stick showed a change from the EPA. Prerunner V6/Auto didn't change.

Oddly the Tacoma.com doesn't even list a Prerunner with the 6MT any more. Maybe it's not available in my region? Only the stick X-runner with 3.15 highway gears is listed. In a 4x4 the stick went from 14/18 to 15/19.

Otherwise all other combinations of V6/Auto and I4/Auto and I4/Stick are unchanged. No 1-2 mpg for them. With a vanishingly small number of sticks sold Toyota isn't helping their fleet average with this 0W20 game.

Not mentioned and not on the TSB list, but I use M1 0W-30. The 0W guarantees that I am getting a Group IV based oil and not a heavily blended Group III.

Thanks...the chart and the knowledge that the oil recommended is on the cap did the trick. Appreciate it.
