I recently switched my vehicles over to synthetic oil.....and I am now a believer that its worth the money and actually puts you ahead in the long run.......I drove my wife car to Buffalo NY in June and got 33-34 MPG .....I filled up with BP gas before I left and made 1 fuel stop on the trip again BP gas ....Oil in the car at that time was 5-20 conventional......I again drove my wifes car to Buffalo NY last wk....same route same desination....same average speed yada ...yada ...only difference was this time the car had Mobil 1 .... 5-20 full synthetic in it.....I got 35-36 miles per gallon.......so at this rate I figure I can save at least $ 40.00 on fuel during the life of the oil per change ....then you need to think instead of changing at 3k ...I can change @ 5-6k and still be fine......and of course there are the lubrication benefits ..etc of synthetic fluid...........My taco runs on all synthetic fluids 2012 ....4.0 ......4dr cab .....4x4...and I got 20.5 mpg with it on another trip to buffalo.......in august..

2mpg is statistically insignificant unless repeatable over time. Two trips (in different weather) is not a valid test.

I've ALWAYS run Mobil-1 in my Taco... follow the Fuelly link in my signature to see my variances from tank to tank... yet I drive the same places every day.

Yep, a couple tanks doesn't prove anything.

I've used Motorcraft 5W-20 for most of 8 years, with a few changes to Mobile 1 5w-20 and found no significant difference.

2 mpg improvement is not realistic, and 3k oil changes are way obsolete.

Ambient temp, elevation, and such, can give an increase or decrease of 2 mpg.

Wow this guy got shot down hard.

Fact is, on such a small engine, and drivetrain, synthetic oils makes zero difference in fuel mileage.

well, i run full synthetic oil and i noticed a bit better millage but the main reason is to protect my engine in the long run. if i was living in florida i would probably careless but here in the winter when i start it cold at -45 degre, it starts much easier and cope with the engine temperature much better and is also more durable due to the fact that it doesn't break down as quick then regular oil with the temps change.

He did make a good point about the distance between oil changes. I do think there is valuable pros to the synthetic.
But there's a thread for that.;)

    Solid defense.

Two tanks doesn't mean a damn thing. Hell I lose about 2mpg when we switch to winter blend gas. Are you insinuating that synthetic oil with the same weight and viscosity as conventional oil will allow the engine's components to move more freely?

    I use Synthetic oil religiously.

You can get synthetic oil change specials all day long for $29.99 with a premium filter mobil 1/ K&N/ Bosch Distance Plus etc

Where a regular oil change special will run $19-21.

So for 1.5 times the price, you can do double the mileage, and change your oil half as often.

But I will say, any NEW oil will get you better MPG than you were getting with your old sludge. Synthetic or not.
