Fumigate travel trailer to get rid of smoke smell?

I'm in the process of getting a used travel trailer, but the previous owner smoked in there and so it smells like a vegas casino. Any tips on fumigating the whole thing? What to replace (cusions, wall paper etc), anything on getting rid of that smell?

Also, if I'm looking at getting new cusions, mattresses, etc, how would I go about getting replacements for those custom sizes? Would I be better of doing most of it myself?

Any tips would be great

 

I would literally wipe down all the surfaces, including floor, walls & ceiling with warm soapy water. That will be a good start.

Cant garrantee this to work, but it should. Go to Walmart and buy a big can of cheap coffee. Buy some cheap panty hose or use the wifes at your own risk . Cut panty hose in 10-12" sections, tie knot on 1 end, fill with coffee grounds, tie knot in top. Set several of these inside trailer, the coffe will absorb smells.
I used coffee to absorb bad odors in trailer when I drove a truck. Example picked up some bull hides hauled them from Fl. to Laredo Tx. Open the back door and the stench was fierce, after unload, had trailer washed out..stench was still bad. Spread out coffee grounds in trailer that PM, next AM, trailer was good to go.
My father in law had squirrels in the attic of his home, so he decides to launch handfuls of moth balls in attic. Squirrels left, but moth balls created a serious smell in the house, they were looking at having a Co. come out suck out insullation, then spray in more insullation. Told him coffee/panty hose trick, he threw in about 20 coffee bombs in attic...smell gone.
Worth a try. Paparika works too, but Coffee is alot cheaper.

 

You can get a product called nil odor that might work. After that I would put in a good air purifier and leave it closed up for a few days with it running.

 

IMO it's not worth it. You'll never get the smoke out of the trailer. I would look at getting a different trailer. In today's market there are tons of deals out there.

 

I had a Ford truck ozone treated one time - it worked pretty well. Concentrate on soft furnishings above the head - that's where the smoke rises too and affects the most.

I just noticed you're not very far from me. Seriously.. I wouldn't fight with smoke or the residual because when it gets hot out you're going to smell it especially in the synthetic fabrics that the trailer cushions are usually made out of. I would take a trip out here to Manteca and surrounding area. Several dealers are going out of business and are blowing their remaining stock out the door. You can get a trailer new for a really good price and not have to mess with the smoke smell.

Don't forget to do a thorough inspection as well to make sure there are no leaks and that everything is fully functional. Check the black tank as well to make sure it was properly taken care of and cleaned out. Nothing worse than having a tank that's half functional because the crap (literally) wasn't properly cleaned out regularly. Horror stories can be found over at rv.net.

 

I guess I should update this thread for archival purposes...

I took out ALL of the upholstery and blinds. Then wiped down all of the walls, cabinets, and ceiling. Then I filled 6 paper bowls with baking soda and put them all around the TT: in cabinets, in the bathroom, out in the open, etc. Then I closed all windows and vents and left it in there.

Seriously, in a matter of ~3 weeks, the cigarette smell is completely gone. And this is from an owner who constantly smoked in it. Now, as I continue to revamp the whole thing, I leave all the vents and windows open, because now it just smells like my grandma's room, plain ol "OLD." Maybe I'll eventually add some febreeze, etc.

So considering all of your wonderful tips, it has completely fixed my problem.

sounds good . We had a trailer that got a little damp and musty over the winter once, and couldn't get the smell out even dried out and aired out, then used ozone and it cleared it completely. Ozone is hazardous to your health though, so you shouldnt be in/around the area being treated.

 

Might have to try this my self.. i wonder if I could feed the coffee to the dog to counter act the smells it releases

 

they use coffee to get rid of some scents at the clinics so that you can smell the next "herb" haha sorry but coffee is THE SHITT!! esp during finals!

To get rid of that "musty" smell try getting some DampRid. Not the kind in the tubs but the DampRid that you can hang in a clothing closet. You can hang one in a couple of the windows in your trailer. They serve two purposes.. they will keep the mositure from forming on the windows and prevent mold in the window trays. Also since they are the ones that are designed for clothing closets they'll keep the moths away and make your trailer smell clean and fresh. I do this when storing and they trailer smells like new when I open it up again for the spring/summer camping season.
