uphill boat towing with 2.7L 4cyl manual

Looking to buy a 2.7L 4cyl 4x4 stick (Oh, it has 234,000 miles on it!!) strictly to tow my ski boat which weighs 3,300 lbs with the trailer. There is the boat ramp (normal grade I guess), flat for about 20 feet then an uphill steep grade for about 40 feet. I'm concerned about this hill. Should I consider a different vehicle? The one for sale has large big tread tires. Sorry if I missed this posting somewhere else. I searched a good bit.

your right at towing capacity, but put it in 4wd and you'll have no problems.

 

You should be fine going up that 40 foot slope in 4 Wheel Low Range.

 

Really? I'm just a smidge under top capacity of 3,500 lbs and the hill is steep. Not ridiculously steep but steep enough to concern me. Got a short trip after the one hill.

 

I have a 2.7L 4x4 5 speed. Although I don't have a boat so I can't say from experience, I would assume it would be just fine. If it was 2wd I would say you might have some issues with your rear tires spinning if they are on a wet hill, but throwing it into 4hi or 4lo would solve that issue.

 

I believe that when they (Toyota) figure towing capacity, they take into account inclines that would be encountered while towing.

 

In 4lo you will probably be able to almost idle out of the boat ramp up the hill.

There will be no horsepower issue due to the low gearing. It is only in the higher gears that you start to see issues with the 4cyl on hills.

 

yeah it shouldn't be an issue at all...i pulled 4000+lb trucks outta the mud with my old '88 4x4 using 4lo...and the new 4cyl has more power than that one did

 

I had an 09 4 cyl. It will not be an issue.
