Paint Stock Wheels?

I am considering painting my stock wheels from silver to black. Has anyone done this? Does it look good? If so, what paint did you use? Did you remove the wheels from the truck when painting or just tape of sections that werent to be painted?

Took them off to truck to paint them and used a gun not a rattle can lol. Had my wheels acid bathed and i can't remember what paint i used off the top of my head but i'll get back to you bro

 

deff don't have a gun to use.

 

You dont need a gun. Ive painted a ton of wheels.

Just clean, wet sand, clean again.

Few layers of primer and some good layers automotive paint in a rattle can.

I used rustoleum primer and krylon automotive flat black.

Im gonna re do in plasti dip though cuz that stuff is awesome

 

Anyone done this without removing the wheels?

 

Is the process of using plasti dip the same was paint?

 

Actually Plasti Dip you dont even have to sand, just clean and make sure the waxes are gone. With that said, I dont think I would trust the Plasti Dip to hold on the wheels. But at least it gives you an idea if you will be happy with it. Imo, try the Plasti Dip, if you dont like it you can peel it back off and still have the stock finish. If you do like it and want to keep them black, see how well it holds up and then peel and paint them or just go ahead and paint them anyway. I just dont believe the PD will hold up on the wheels though. Maybe someone will tell that has tried it.

 

I've seen some posts on here, and a couple vids on youtube about how the Plasti Dip holds up. If you rash them up, it will peel just like paint. From what I can see though it holds up very nicely for quite a while (1 Yr+)

 

So I have decided to do it but would like to just leave the wheels on. Anyone done this? Any problems/concerns?

 

Or I am going to have to use the single jack it comes with and do them one at a time...

 

having trouble removing the weights.. any advice?

 

^^^ what weights are one the wheels?

if they are the sticker kind, just leave them on..why take them off just to paint, you then have to go get rebalanced...

 

Just finished 2 of them!!!!! Looking good. Plasti-dip is the sh!tttt. I imagine if you get any dings in them, it can be easily touched with with a few sprays right???

 

I noticed it dings somewhat easy as I was putting my wheels back on (By the way, the lugnuts are junk). My concern is that when I take it to get serviced at the dealer, a careless mechanic is going to be chipping away as he is taking the nuts off and putting back on. Any experience with this? Also if they have to rebalance the wheels at some point it would deffinitaly be even worse. Can dings like that just be covered with a few sprays?

I did. If you read.

 

A few lessons learned:
-Deffinitaly use playing cards not index cards
- Take your time with the first coat. Just get a nice even thin layer. DON'T OVER DO IT!
-Took me about 1 can per wheel.
-Only waited about an hour after the last coat before reinstalling wheel. I didn't drive it for about 8 hours after that though.
-Have good light to make sure cover everything
-Be careful when/if removing the weights. You can damage your wheel.
