050.jpg 052.jpg 049.jpg e-trailer is selling the plug-n-play wiring harness for the 2016 Tacoma. The part number is C56282. You disconnect the connectors on the truck tail lights and plug in the harness. This unit requires you to run a wire to the front of the truck for the 12V that powers the trailer lights.
If you want to install the factory style 7/4 pin receptical by the liscence plate, the part number is HM40975-11998. This is the kit that comes with the connector and wires that plug into the new recepticle. Cut the 4 pin flat off and connect to the same color wires on the new recepticle wires. You will have 3 wires left over. Use these if you want to wire in a controller for trailer breaks. I don't like chasis grounds so I ran two wires to the front of the truck. One for ground and one for the 12v that provides power for the trailer lights. If you choose to do this you will need an extra 22 feet of 12 ga. wire. I made all the connections behind the tail light (there is plenty of roon in there). I also installed the controller box in this area. I had to extend the green wire that goes over to the right tail light. It could have been my installation, but it looked pretty short. I used conduit everywhere.

Running the wire to the front makes this a lot less cool than I was hoping it would be. Does this accommodate a brake controller too or just the trailer lights?

I got everything from etrailer. The recepticle is made by "Pollack". I listed the part numbers. It snapps right into the bumper and looks just like the factory one. It comes with the wires.

I had 3 left over wires on the back of the 7/4 pin recepticle. If you want to wire in a brake controller, these are the three wires you would use for that.
This Curt controller runs the trailer lights. The plugs at the tail lights on the truck just provide the signals that trigger the controller to deliver power to the trailer lights. This is better, because it causes no drain on the truck signal lights wiring, and cannot cause any problems like overloads or funny flash rates. Any shorts at the trailer won't affect the truck.

So you purchased the harness and the 7/4 connector from etrailer and they both together ran about $100 and just cut the 4 pin connector off the wiring harness and attach it to the 7/4 connector. Does that 7/4 connector snap right into the oem location after you take out the fake cover that's there from factory?

I am still skeptical about how you got this connection. I understand you cut the 4 way connector off, but I can't see a 7 pin connector for part C56282.

I need your help. I got all of the exact same equipment you did, wired both positive and the ground to the battery up front but the lights on the driver side of the trailer don't work? I've checked everything I can think of.

I have the same problem. I haven't tried to fix it yet. Drivers side trailer lights flash faintly when the brakes are on. Not sure why.

For those who have successfully got this setup to work please update us who have been having the issue of the driverside(left), power, brake, and signal, not working. This would save future member a lot of stress. I hooked up my setup and had the same issue as some of you guys. I just got off the phone with etrailer and they told me I have the wrong 7 and 4pole connector(HM40975-11998). They suggest for me to order the plug for a 2nd gen. I'll try to rewire to see if I have missed something or done something wrong. If I figure something out I'll let you guys know.

Easy fix. When you cut the flat 4 connector from the hitch harness, you'll have Brown(power), White(ground), Green(right side), and Yellow(left side). From the 7 and 4 pole connector you'll have Brown, white, Green, Yellow, Red, Blue, and Black. Connect the three matching color wires except for yellow. You'll have to connect the red wire from the connector to the yellow from the harness. This should work. Look at the wire diagram if you have any issue. Regardless the color, as long as it's the same function it should work.

When everything is wired up, does the 7 pin side work? From my understanding the 7 pin is mainly for heavier loaded trailers with electric brakes. So I’m assuming if u don’t install a brake controller the 7 pin doesn’t work. Anyone familiar with this?

Side steps, tint, led lighting, after market wheels, tow hitch, flag decals, camo glove box letter inserts.
Did anyone ever figure this problem out? I called etrailer and they said that part #C56282 no longer exist. It was replaced with part #C56349. I’m about to buy it but i saw that everyone was having problems after installation.
