Tailgate locking itself?

I don't think it's stock because of the keyhole obviously. Worse case cut the liner and replace it afterwards or possibly a locksmith can turn it.

 

Do you see a number on the lock cylinder? I can't tell by the video.

 

There doesn't appear to be any numbers there.

 

pop n lock right there....not standard

 

I guess the previous owner must have put on a pop n lock.
I don't have a key for it, and no way of getting in touch with previous owner. Doubt the dealership will be much help either. Any ideas?

 

Only thing is, removing the panel while the gate up seems impossible. It's jammed in the sides.

 

It is an aftermarket locking handle. The Tacoma did not come stock with the lock.
Obviously has to be replaced. You may start by drilling out the key hole or doing your best to jam a flathead in the lock and breaking the key.

 

When I look at your picture vs the popandlock ads, it appears the handle is backwards to me. The camera should be on the right, lock on the left?

Anyway, I'd contact them directly with good stills (not a fuzzy video) and seek their advice.

They do sell replacement keys, if they think that could be a solution for you.

There is no code on the lock face at all. It doesn't look like a pop n lock to me, which is why I thought it was stock. Maybe it's aftermarket, but a no-name part?
Seems weird because the rest of the truck was 100% bone stock when I bought it. It was a lease return and 100% of the maintenance for the 3 years they had it had been done at the dealership!

 

Contact a key place. I had a safe I lost all the keys for and they made a key. I highly doubt that lock is anything special.

 

Just for grins, try your truck key in the tailgate keyhole. I've seen the bolt code able locks for our tailgates available recently. Could be one of those. Or check the secret compartment left and below the steering wheel for keys.

 

I have a pop n lock and that looks exactly the same. Have you emailed or talked to the pop lock people?

I contacted the dealership yesterday. In my opinion, they shouldn't be selling used vehicles with locking components and not providing keys for those components. The GM left me a message, I think they're going to cover the cost of going to a locksmith which is great.

 

If it has a keyhole in the handle then it must be aftermarket. I don't believe Toyota has ever produced a locking tailgate for the Tacoma...yet.

This is my concern with geting a pop n lock since they seem to have so many issues with them. I don't want to find myself with a tailgate locked in the closed position yet I'd like to secure the bed.

 

If you don't care about the lock drill it out. Replace the part with the stock one and call it a day.

 

That's the best option.
There's a reason for locksmiths.
They work on locks.

 

While you are at the dealer, get a new gate handle and ditch the lock.

 

Thought i would post an update and some info about the solution I used in case anyone has this issue in the future.

Went to the locksmith and they were basically useless. They said the lock was too corroded to make a key for and that they couldn't sell me a replacement lock, only install it. So, I took matters into my own hands.

Me and a buddy took the top panel off the tailgate and hit the latch with a screwdriver to get it open. After checking out how the pieces moved, it was obvious that the lock wasn't staying in the disengaged position, and would stick in the engaged position when you pulled the handle. This is obviously how it locked itself in the first place.
So, we zip-tied the lock to a hole in the tailgate to fix it in the disengaged position. I also took the opportunity to clean the inner tailgate area and hit it with some WD-40 and grease.
Bit of a redneck fix for now - Planning to get a replacement lock at some point, but with the canopy on there the lock isn't too important and the big thing is I can get the tailgate open and closed.
