First Oil Change

I didn't think it would I usually do all of my oil changes but this is my first new truck

 

I suggest that you buy a notebook, accordion file, or something to keep the records in. Write in the date, odometer reading, the service (oil change, tire rotation, whatever), and whether you did it or it was done by a dealership or other shop. Attach receipts for oil, supplies, or dealer/mechanic work.

If, for example, your engine spun a bearing at 35,000 miles, you might need to show the dealership that, yes, you did every oil change, and here's the dates, and here's the receipts. That's why when a car is under warranty I don't stock up on oil, I buy it the day of or the day before I do the chage--less of an opportunity to argue that I didn't do the oil change on time.

 

I am planning on doing my first change at 1K and using a pure synthetic oil. This worked well on my last three vehicles.

 

Someone said they changed the oil,when they first got it home,because they said the oil in the oilpan is not clean when arrived from the factory . Myth? I dunno

 

Sounds like B.S. to me. I pulled the dipstick on my '09 when I got it home and could barely see it on the stick it was so clean.

 

I had my first oil change couple weeks, took it to the dealer, because I dont know how to reset the warning light "maint req".

I said other, because i have heard its good to change the oil within 1000 miles of new so to assure that all lose metal shavings are removed from the engine so their not floating around for extended periods of time. Plus it gets you to synthetic faster...

 

I did mine after 5000 like normal. It was regular oil, and was pretty damn dirty coming out, but switched to synthetic now, and I will just continue to change it every 5k.

 

I bought a 2006 2.7 with 40k miles a few months ago and just changed my oil for the first time at 43k. It looked pretty dirty coming out of the pan and pouring into the recycle jug. Not sure if anyone else is having this problem but I am having a hard time getting a good reading on the dipstick when the oil is super clean. It seems there is always some oil on the area above the full mark but it's not quite 'solid' across the stick like it is in the OK area (the oil on the stick above the OK mark is on the sides of the stick but it's enough to screw up the reading). I put in 5.5 qt so I know it's not too low. After about five tries to get a good reading on the stick I finally decided the level is very likely just fine. Have thought about putting some fine hatch marks on the stick in the OK area with a small file, but any tips would be appreciated.

 

At the dealership now for my first of three free oil changes here. Changing at 2733 miles because I leave Thursday night for a 1200 mile trip pulling a trailer. I'll get my two more free changes here then I'll do it myself from then on.

i woud do it at 500 then 1000 and every 5000 after that with synthetic mobil one or royal purple

 

The important thing is that you change it regularly. Everyone has their own routine for breaking in a new engine. Mine, I drive the car for ~500 to ~1000 miles and change it with NON synthetic. I change it again with NON synthetic at 3,000 and again at 6,000. The 6,000 mile oil change is the first time I use full synthetic.

Synthetic oil is great stuff. It's almost too good which is why I don't use it until the engine is broken in. If you want to see if what I'm suggesting makes sense, get a magnetic oil plug and watch...

 

I have 800 miles on mine, checked oil and it's looks real clean. Will probably have it changed around 2500-3k miles.

 

after reading every thread i can only summarize it like this.

dino vs synth (no big deal, hence the blends)

follow the owners manual and change it at 5K, and if you are going to switch to synths wait til the second or third change. (sounds reasonable).

i'm gonna stick with dino till i hit 12K and then make the switch to synth unless someone steers me the other way between now and then. both my father and father in-law a big SYNTH guys and if i ever had an issue i don't want the "i told ya so".

QUESTION: Anyone see a problem with changing the oil every 3k miles and changing the filter every other time (at 6k)? I've had my Taco for about 5 months now, the selling dealer did an oil change at 40k and I changed it at 42300, it was fairly dirty and I put on a new premium filter at that time. I just changed it today at 45k and again it was pretty dirty for only 2700 miles. Because of the low miles since the last oil change, I left the filter on and added 5 qts of fresh oil, plus I figure the filter can handle an extra 1k beyond the recommended 5k change interval, especially if 90% of the oil is being replaced at 3k. Let me know what you think, thanks.

 

On the 2.7 it would be a problem, because a lot of oil comes out of the engine when you take the filter off. I guess you could put the filter back on, but once you go through the trouble of taking the old one off, you might as well put a new one on. On the 4.0, it probably wouldn't matter as much, especially since a quality oil filter will last more than 10,000 miles.JMO.
