u can run it with zero filter element and gain zero hp

the chambers/resonator on the intake itself is the culprit, its been proven on a Dyno

now yall guys got my considering this! ive always thought my truck was pretty damn stout and got good mileage in factory trim, the mangaflow muffler did help. is this worth it? im hesitant to try this and screw something up where she wont run, or trigger a cel.

Factory cruise added, wood storage box in bed, wood center console/armrest, charcoal air filter delete.
It'll run the same and not trigger a malfunction because it will make no change at all. Leave it alone and be happy that the charcoal trap and the air filter already have more airflow capability than the engine can use. If you absolutely HAVE to spend time improving the airbox and can't sleep without messing with it do it with a clean rag and plastic polish to make is snazzy looking. Then stand back and again admire the fact that this emissions control device has no detrimental effect on performance at all and is actually a good thing.

Sooo pardon my ignorance, but I was thinking about getting a cold air intake set up for my 14' V6...Is it worth it to pay the extra money for cold air or should I just get a new "drop in"? I can't help but feel that the intake box just robs the engine of efficiency.

Nope, it's sized for efficiency, and your throttle plate is almost always more restrictive than the intake box, if you are trying to drive efficiently.

You can get a throttle body adapter for a 76 mm throttle body.

First of all, YOU said "notable impact"....not me.

Further....this isn't a question of air demand. The engine, while running, is constantly pulling vacuum. At idle, vacuum is highest because restriction is greatest - that being the butterfly almost completely closed. The only other notable restriction is going to be the filter. So when the plate initially cracks open, the resistance to allowing that rush of air to fill your intake is lessened due to having one less obstruction in the flow pathway. Couple this with the fact that some...actually most...people claim worse mileage when pulling the carbon screen out is anecdotal evidence that more air is moving. So actually, it does make sense. Its just not enough of a difference to take 10 minutes off your 1/4 mile times.

What does NOT make sense is to think that an obstruction such as this could not, in any way, alter the flow dynamics of the intake.

As for my driving varying (as stated by worthywads), this is true in the most absolute sense. I tried to include my observations due to the fact that my driving is exceptionally consistent in this truck. I have multiple vehicles and, for most of the fall, was only driving my truck to and from work which included 120 miles of sparsely populated interstate each way. There was minimal deviation from traffic, speed, load, and hardly any stop and go. It was as good a test bed as you could get without doing dedicated lab testing.

I have since lost interest in this. My computer has adapted to the change and my mileage has resumed running in the upper 20's.

    Cheers

I think there is more to this intake/intake manifold. There's a system called the (ACIS) Acaustic control induction sytem.
The system is able to change the intake runner length allowing more or less air in.
It's more complex than old school engines.

So taking out the carbon filter or making the tb bigger changing the intake system toa hi flow is not going change much.

If you want big change get it tuned or go big and make it non- aspirated.

There is info video on YouTube about the toyota ACIS.
    sorry for the interruption.

Fact is it can't hurt your mpg or improve it, it can't improve your power, can't really do anything since it isn't really a restriction.

Rest assured that it doesn't matter and you wasted your time removing it.

Sounds like something I would definetly do. Does anyone know if it would work on a 2002, 4 cylinder 2.7 litre?

Thanks, This will be my first mod. I hope the dealer won't give me any crap about it (if they find out about it).

The dealer can't give you crap about it, they're not your mommy. Removing emissions components is illegal in most places so that could bite you if it were ever noticed. There's no benefit to removing it and some potential downsides so I'd leave it be.
