Honesty makes for a better relationship. Chest thumping and bullying don't really do all that much. For anyone.

So 2 key things have served me well in the past............

    1) Is there a part worn out that needs replacement? If so, upgrading the part *may* be cheaper than an OE replacement. And if you do the labor yourself, you will certainly be less total dollars than taking it to a shop.

    2) do you have discretionary income that you can afford to spend, and agree to spend it that way? By discretionary I mean are all the bills paid, you're saving a strong percentage of income for retirement, you have several months of savings in case you lose a job, you have disability insurance and life insurance in place? Even better is if you have no debt outside of a mortgage or rent. No CC debt or vehicle payments.

As you may discern, I'm a fan of debt free. I know it's un-American, but the joy of that freedom is well worth the sacrifice it can take to get there. ;)

I simply cannot imagine my partner even questioning where my money gets spent. That would not fly in my book. Then again I own three businesses and I am her only employer at the moment. Honestly, I'd just buy it and stand up for myself. As long as your meeting basic needs/expenses and its your hard earned money, what's the issue?

That is something you want, not need.

If money is tight at home, you'll have no luck convincing any normal wife for the suspension 'upgrade'..... and YOU shouldn't even be thinking of that anyway.

My wife and I have NO joint accounts. She has her money and I have mine, we split the bills..... it's been like that for years with absolutely no problems.

If I want (not need) something, I buy it, as long as I'm smart about it and it doesn't break the bank. The same goes for her. What she and I have in common is that we're not foolish with $$$.

Having no kids makes it easier... I guess

She pays the electric and phone, I pay the taxes, lawncare service.. etc. One week she pays for groceries, the next week I do it.

We don't keep 'score' on who pays for and buys what, but it works out great. :)

Tell her your shit is breaking down and you don't want to die. Or tell her you're going to pickup some overtime shifts if she won't let you. Orrr your sister needs to "borrow" money (make sure she's in on it)

I went a hybrid approach, myself.

The paycheck week-to-week from me was the backbone of our household budget. So, that was generally hands-off for me (she was an accountant and the kind of accountant you'd want if you were an organized crime boss)

However, when one of us wanted something, there were a couple of ways we went about it.

Little shit...like, less than $100, go buy it and make sure you give me the receipt so it can be accounted for and filed.

More than that, but still three digits....either tell her and send her a link to get it online, and it'll 'suddenly appear' in a box from Amazon or someplace in the next couple weeks at some point.

Once you cross the four digit threshold, it was meeting time, as that was a big enough chunk of dough that we needed to be a check on each others' weakness for the shineys.

Thankfully, neither of us had much of a weakness on this point, so it rarely came up.

Also: If I made 'side money', as in doing computer work outside of my job for cash or trade, that was all mine, no questions asked. So, when I wanted some truck or gaming rig parts, I'd generally do some off-hours consulting work and pocket the cash for the work.

Win/win/win for everyone. We did this for 15 years with great success.

I convince the wife by replacing stuff that the car/ truck "needs". I hit a pot hole, and go "see, I definitely need a new suspension... this is unsafe!" then just upgrade.

In all honesty though we never really argue about money. We have seperate bank accounts, we both have jobs, we have our own spending $ so we don't have the need to dictate what each other buys. Yet, sometimes we can pool our money together for trips etc.

Too much to take in at once, huh?

Are you a battered husband? You can talk to us about it, it won't leave this thread.

You could take the MikeDeason approach and let your son drive your truck drunk. Eventually he will likely destroy something and then you have to replace it. You can blame it on HER son. He also likes to shoot things that need replaced. Seems to work well for him.
