What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Looks good!

 

Taking apart the front anyway, but maybe one of you would know. It's a brownish/red medium to light thickness fluid. It LOOKS like power steering fluid but it tastes really sweet and nasty. The power steering has a dull, oily taste. And I don't run the Toyota red coolant. It's coming out of the front of the engine but don't seem to see any lines leaking. We thought maybe the water pump leaking but not sure.

 

Why are you tasting fluids that leaks from your trucks engine?

 

It's the best way to diagnose.

Case and point. It clearly looked like power steering fluid. But when you taste it. It's obviously not. And anti-freeze is sweet. It's not enough to make you sick. You spit it out afterwards. Just a little dab on on the finger.

Does noone else do that? lol

 

That's how my grandpa taught me to do it.

 

Lauren you said it was red in cllor? And you know its not coolant, how about trans fluid?

It's not quite that red. And trans fluid isn't sweet, and this is quite sweet. So thinking it has to probably be coolant. Maybe it's just dirty or something and it's coming from the front of the engine.

Yeah that write up is good if you don't have a press. I have a Harbor Freight 20 ton press and it makes this a very quick job. You could buy a press and the parts for cheaper than buying a new nose cone from Toyota. It's pretty dang simple and that write up is pretty good if you don't have a press. No special tools are needed if you have a press. Just some sockets and the new bearings and seal. I will be doing another in the next week so I will take lots of pictures and post them up.
