this is my first year with a scan gauge where I'm measuring trans. Temp. In the winter I don't think it went above 170 degrees now with outside temp only 80 degrees in stop and go driving I'm hitting 205 degrees. Now once I start driving the temp will go down pretty quickly to the 185 range but I'm worried about summr temps and am thinking about a transmission cooler. What do you guys think normal or not? Tia

An added transmission cooler would not hurt and if you have room and the finances get one with a thermostatically controlled fan.

I would not worry, Toyota thermostats dont even open below 205, they get fully open at like 230.
One thing I would suggest doing is checking your fluid level.
If you dont have enough fluid you will get big temp jumps, (which it sounds like)
Thats because air gets trapped in various spots and keeps temp up.
I have 07 too and I dont think I had ever seen 200F on it.

If the temperature is bouncing around you are likely getting a temperature reading from the converter. I wouldn't worry about it until your over 230ish, and even then I'd probably flush the system before hacking in more cooling.

Where's @gearcruncher , he always gets pretty technical with these discussions ;).

I didn't think the A750 had a thermostat? Normal operating temp is 122-176°F, idiot light will come on at 302°F.
Edit: the older a750f/e trannys in the tundras had a heat exchanger and thermostat, the tacomas do not.

Hopefully someone here can help me with a wiring problem. I've just added an extra trans cooler and mounted a fan in front of it. The fan has an inline T-stat 165off and 185on but I would like to have the option of turning the fan on with a switch in the cab to help with a/c and other cooling needs when I'm at a stop for a period of time. I know the fan willnt do much but I want it:angrygirl: . So my question is should I just tap into power wire after the T-Stat with 12v feed? Or will That back feed the switch if the stat closes and burn out the switch. The other thing is I forget things a lot and didn't want open switch keeping t-stat from running the fan.

Well, How did you connect fan ?
Does it have relay ? or is it direct connection through own thermostat? If it uses relay is there a way to tap to relay control ?

if you you have a relay and thermostat powers one leg of that relay you can tap there with switch and power from some fuse that only works when key is on (like Lighter)

I haven't wired anything yet but was planning to run 12v from blue sea fuse box directly to T-stat then to fan. The other thing I was thinking was to wire fan hot all the time and brake ground with t-stat and hook up switch to ground so both would run fan but not interfere with each other.

Don't wire directly, it's accident waiting to happen.
I would run power to fan through relay, use thermostat to engage relay to turn the fan on. You can install switch to bypass thermostat.
So your switch + thermostat can have low amp circuit powered by something small, but your fan can be on thicker gauge wire with 10-15 amp fuse.
Don't wire them hot. Only with ignition on, unless you willing risk of fire or dead battery.
    Hope that helps.

I'm going to try to help you FWIW. At 80 degrees you are seeing a slight rise in trans temp but it is still 100 + degrees below overheating. So if the outside temp reaches 100 degrees for the sake of argument it seems to me that you will still have a large safety margin. Did you check the variation in trans temp during winter driving in the same conditions

Yesterday wheeling in some warm humid weather with my S/C I had the transmission converter temps bumping again 220 F. I'm not worried at all unless I cross that threshold. At 220 F, which only happens for a few seconds at the torque converter sensor, the fluid isn't taking any really sever abuse.

Best way to cool the transmission is definitely turning your Tacoma into a submarine jks, which I almost did yesterday.

Get you owners manual and read up on how to do an "X" Gauge. Then input the listed numbers to set up the Temp Gauge.
