How To Remove CV Axle+Replace Front Wheel Bearing 2nd Gen

That is correct. Pull the CV out then use a seal puller (or large flat tip screwdriver) and pry the seal out. I used a bearing/race punch to knock the new seal in. then reassemble. Make sure the slot in the C-clip is down when you re-install the CV axle in the dif.

 

are you replacing the diff seal or the cv seal (710573) that is on the inside of the spindle?

 

Just for clarification seal 710477 is the seal that is on the bearing itself



710573 is the seal on the inside of the spindle between the cv & spindle.

The seal on the end of the cv shaft is a Toyota only seal -- that's this one here.

 

"Timken inner seal 710573 - This inner seal is the one that is installed into the back side of the steering spindle, where the CV axle slides in. Recommended for all 4X4 bearing replacement jobs"

 

Correct. Unfortunately you can't see that seal until the bearing is removed, so having one on hand is a good idea -- or make sure your local parts store has them in stock. I sell them for $12.50 each, local parts store are around $20 & typically stock them.

 

Ok, thanks. So you don't have to take the CV axel out of the diff for this seal?

 

That is correct Flint, no need to remove the entire shaft, just the end that goes into the spindle.

When you get down to the point that the hub assembly is removed, remove the two 19mm lower ball joint bolts. That will allow you to swing the spindle out to access the seal.

How do you change this seal and can i get it from you, like you said? Do you think if I got a new spindle from toyota, it'd come with that seal, new?

I use a block of wood, a piece of PVC pipe, or a collar from a ball joint press kit to knock the new one in.

A spindle from the dealer would be pricey and would not have the seal.

 

Anyone know the correct torque of the two 19mm bolts on lower ball joint on reassembly?

out there on the WWW is see 59 ft lb one place, 116 at another.

And there's some chatter about these bolts coming out and or shearing off "because too tight" after reinstall ??

I'll probably use some blue loctite too.

To be clear, I am referring to the two 19mm bolts that hold the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle - flange bolts.

Someone with a manual must have these numbers for the Gen 2 4x4 Tacoma.

I'm not a fan of torque specs because of this exact situation. I've never had a problem with anything loosening up or being too tight

I'm with Josh on this one.

Knowing when to let off the impact gun or breaker bar is my torque spec when it comes to these things.
