Truck Camping Photo Thread

I've never been down to Hale Creek in my Tacoma before. I was warned by a guy at my work that I shouldn't take my basically stock DCLB down there as the roads really rough and I'd probably damage something. I know there's an "easy way" and a "hard way" in. Do you think I'd have any issues in my stock limo taking the easy way in?

 

Years ago I had practically zero off road experience and took my new short box chevy in the "easy" way. I had no issues. Arriving late in the afternoon it was a pretty big thrill to take the new truck in, albeit a tad nervous. The road wasn't bad, just one dip through a creek bed that you should watch your angles and be prepared to encounter someone coming up. Take your time, look ahead on the road to note the terrain before you're on top of it.
If a full-size chevy with a newb at the wheel can make it, you should be good with the narrower Tacoma. Respect the trails, take it slow.

I actually saw a full size chevy van down at Hale Creek once. That ass hat just gunned it up the road (had no respect for the trails). And in a huge surprise, one year a dude in a rented Chrysler 300 popped out at the beach. That attracted at least 20 ppl to inspect his heavily damaged underside. I gather he barged the car out or made "other" arrangements :| The van and the 300 were just dummies.. but if they can make it, your Tacoma surely can too.

 

Which campground is this? I wanna say Wheeler Gorge but they all sort of look alike.

 

I've done both ways when my truck was 100% stock. Wit good lines and going slow you'll make it just fine try and hook up with some experienced guys heading down. Hauled my dirt bike out to Moab and camped downtown at the Canyonlands RV Resort for a week. Rode the White Rim Trail and some other stuff. Gotta go back.

 

Camp Rock... 9 miles up Cottonwood Canyon in Death Valley. I usually enjoy the quiet solitude that comes with backcountry camping but ...once a year we break out the loud toys and play rock star.. with only ourselves to annoy.

 

That's awesome. I'm more used to an acoustic guitar or a bose sound dock while camping. You guys go big.

 

Can you still get Macallan 12 year old in the US (at least in your state)? We can only get the non age statement (1824 Series) here in Canada and I just can't bring myself to buy expensive scotch based on E150A colorant.

 

I went back to Sloquet Hot Springs with some friends over the weekend. I've camped here earlier in the year during easter. See my post on page 84 for pics of that trip.

This place is pretty awesome, its about 90KM on FSR coming in from either Pemberton to the north or Harrison to the south. We took the Harrison route there and back this time. Last time I did the loop out to Pemberton/Whistler and then back down to Vancouver via the Sea to Sky Highway. The Harrison route is pretty rough with some sections that require 4low, but ultimately nothing a stock truck couldn't get through. It does makes the drive a little bit more interesting though. The Hot Springs themselves are about a 10 min walk down from the campsites to some man made rock pools nestled right next to a raging cold water river. Its nice jumping between the two to warm up and cool down.

4 low you mention? Last time I went was in my 08 f150 with poor tires and 4x4 wasn't working. I remember saying "if it wasn't for the firewood in the back we wouldn't have made it"

Can't wait to try in the new truck.

 

You could probably make it in 2wd still if you absolutely had to. But unless you have a lot of weight in the back like you did you'd spin the tires lots which increases your chances of getting a flat. You're better off gearing down for part of it, about a 10 minute section. It gets steep, rocky and loose, and the drainage ditches are fairly deep. Good tires will help, and I highly recommend airing down as soon as you hit the dirt. It's a long way off pavement and it makes a world of difference.

 

Skyway Motorway Offroad Trip



Friend Brian and I and the wives gave my offroad trailer its shakedown cruise this weekend. Took a ride on the Skyway Motorway in the Talladega National Forest in Alabama. Link for the Motorway posted by another venturer is here. Trailer proved its worth through some heavy tilting and inclines with no issues. Camped overnight at a primary area near the end of section 1. We were the only ones there aside from a few hikers that passed through. Park Ranger rode through the area about 2100 but did not even stop to talk. Really had a great time and looking forward to some greater challenges with the trailer one day. Kept it simple for a one night road/camping trip for some fly fishing. I'm 5'10" and sleep well even in my DCSB.....just bend the knees a little.

Managed a few nice landlocked salmon too. Not the best pic, but this one was fatter than it looks & 18"
