I've only had the truck a few months. Not under warranty anymore. Should I take it in and get the transmission serviced? It does have about 103,000 on it

You shouldn't need a rep, but the subject of your post has beaten around in a great many threads, so the more experienced people ignore it, and with a smaller post count not that many people will know you and be willing to jump in.
The phrase I remember from the past is 'lurch'. Comes from one of two sources, and it sounds like you have both. First source is the transmission downshifting, second is the yoke sliding from axle wrap. When you accelerate the rear axle rotates due to the torque, this rotation allows the yoke to extend. Since the splines do not have a grease fitting, and not everyone moves the bellows and greases, the splines get rusty or dirty, and kind of jump back into the home position at a stop. Add grease, and they will slide more easily.
As for the downshift, it is a combination of tranny fluid and driving style. Cold fluid is thicker and may react differently, and aged fluid is sticky.

Cool! And thank you. I will search on how to do the grease and it's time I had the transmission serviced too. I really appreciate the time and help and tips!

Don't feel too bad....I have a 2015 with about 800 miles and I get the thud too. Most likely axel wrap though.

After you're done, post an update here, letting us know what you did, and the results, and toss in a picture or two to aid in the explanation.

Well of course not to long after I posted the update the problem comes back. Not nearly as bad as before but it's still there. Guess I will have to look into the axle wrap solution

I took it to the shop and they changed 10 quarts but not sure about the flush. I know they dropped the pan and changed the filter

That should have cleaned it up pretty well. I need to lube the yoke splines as well. I'll be using the 'red and tacky' from lucas I believe.
