I seen someone spiral a wire hanger and fit it in the tube. Said it worked like a charm.

That could be the case, or it could just be very weak rubber. Either way, you know there is negative pressure in the intake tract pre-throttle body. This is normal in even stock setups.

Well if you're creating any kind of vacuum that's not satisfied by the volume of air the snorkel/piping will supply then you're starving the motor for air and that's just dumb.

It's like the exact opposite of a supercharger.

I have to agree with this, if it's collapsing, it's creating a vacuum like suction through the tube.

    Edit
after looking at the pic on Amazon, i'm guessing it's the L shaped tube that's collapsing?
look's like it's just too tight of a 90° angle, maybe you could try the coiled wire idea that was mentioned.

So back on the random check engine light. I was paying very close attention to the way the truck drives and feels. The mid rpm range felt laggy when rolling on the throttle. I could say if it was a problem, or the nature of this truck. Idle felt like it would stumble on occasion, never enough to show any misfire data. I spent some good time chasing electrical circuits looking for possible issues finding none. I was using a lab scope watching rpm signals form the crank and cam, IGT and IGF signals, odd spots in the TPS, not finding anything. Thinking I must of missed something stupid (remember K.I.S.S) I went back to basics. I remembered I did a bore scope but like a dummy, I didn't compression test, why? I think I was thinking cracked head as I had seen may of those on the 3.4l so I jumped the gun on my tests (also the inside of the engine was stupid clean so i assumed it couldn't be compression loss due to wear). Well a compression test revealed low compression readings on the whole passenger bank.

    Anyone see the issue?

I didn't think I would need to be in the timing belt this soon. The belt was done by a Toyota Tech about a year before I purchased the truck (he even works at my dealer). It looks like he didn't do cleanup after he repaired a very leaky water pump. The residue worked its way into the tensioner pivot causing it to stick. A sticking timing belt tensioner pivot could cause the belt to jump time, or they f-ed it up to begin with as far as timing goes. Either way, this truck has been very educational for him as the amount of shit I give him for all the fuck ups I find (this truck belonged to one of his "loyal customers"). I could go on a bigger rant about some techs but will stop here with one last thing to say. This isn't a career path for your typical high school failure like it used to be. Administrators, stop sending the dummies to automotive class as a career option, if they can't computer, they can't car.

So I cleaned it up and installed the belt in time. Couple drives now and it feels a lot better. The stumble is gone (other then now I can feel the a/c compressor is causing a vibration) and the engine power band is a lot smoother. No more mid rpm roll-on bog. It feels like most other Tacoma trucks now.

Just the last 3? Could be the LED antidark lighting? Or my shaky hands holding the phone.

If it is all of them, it is my phone. Samsung note3

Strangest thing ever. The focus is all messed up and it's a common thing. Tmobile sent me a new one and it does it too. It's a great photo after you hit it against something but until you do it wants to focus like a macro shot. Maybe the note3 has the same issue now that it's running lollipop??

BTW. I'm glad you got it diagnosed, Brian. Not sure what to think of it being a tech you know who let it happen...

I found out I had an image stabilizer for dark conditions on. Not sure if that is causing what you see.

So, which truck to you like better offroad? I assume the 4R is better on road.

I never really would pick one over the other. I like a truck for truck reasons, and the 4runner for all the reasons a SUV is better.

The 4runner has a better ride off road. The a-trac makes climbs easier. Family hauling, it has a ton of room. In general, as a occupant you feel more comfortable. I added the rear diff lock so I turned it into a monster for normal trails. It has a wicked turning radius, it can out turn our Camry.

I'm a truck guy, I do enough stuff that needs heavy hauling that I need a truck. The truck has more payload and towing ability. It has a diff lock also. It is a trail mule, hauls whatever on or off the trail. It is cheap enough, if it gets damaged I'm not too worried.

If I was going on a trail that has a realistic chance of body damage, the truck wins. The 4runner has way more value and looks better. Once I get a rear bumper built, who knows.

Haha, good answer. I do wish I had a bed often, but have yet to be totally out of space in the 4R where I can't make it work. I think my next fab project will be getting a bender and making a low-pro roof rack.
