Front diff drop kit needed????!!

Hey, what are you thoughts on a front dif drop kit for 2015 tacoma with the 3" ome kit?

 

do some searching, it's not recommended to put a diff drop on a gen 2

I just dropped my '06 Taco off at the dealer for the frame recall today & talked to them about lifting it. I left a new set of Billstiens with it for them to replace the original shocks. I asked how much lift before I needed to drop the diff. The tech said that with anything over about 1.5" lift I should add the diff drop spacer.

I asked the Toyota tech about that & he said the same thing as I thought. Just add a little more lube to the differential. It won't take much to get the level back to where it needs to be to lube the bearing.

He says that without the diff drop spacer, the cv joint boots will start to have grease squeeze out from them.

Even though the TRD Pro runs just fine on a factory 2" lift without diff drop spacers? Often the dealer techs are not knowledgeable when it comes to mods.

 

What is the real risk of running 2 to 4 inches of lift in a 4wd? I plan to buy a 4wd my next go round but I also plan to lift it. That being said, I see plenty of 4WD's lifted. I'm mainly concerned about the CV axles - I've collected to skip on the diff drop.

 

I have had mine on for 5 years with no troubles. It is all up to you, if you want it do it, and if not then dont. No one really knows if it is bad or not it just depends on how you use it.

 

The folds of the CV boot can touch each other at higher angles. Over time this causes the boot to wear down. Note the concern is just for the boot; the CV joint itself can easily handle the angles. The cheapest way to deal with the issue is to cut the boot clamp at the small-diameter end, slide the boot farther along the shaft so it is less compressed, and install a hose clamp over it.

 

That's it? That's what all the fuss is about?

This was so helpful. My TRD came lifted with the diff spacer on it and I will gladly swap boots than to have this happen. My 3rd gen 4runner needed the drop spacers... I think but i take this truck into harsher terrain. Thanks again for sharing this.

 

I still can't believe one guy had a problem like 8 years ago on his race truck where he crashed into a boulder during a race and since he was running a modified skid plate that pretty much made the mounts a huge bullseye, it did major damage.

This was the one and only guy to have ever had any kind of problem running a diff drop and yet a large group of folks have made them out to be the devils product

I thought people were also concerned because it's not really a Diff Drop, but it rotates the diff? The new angle *could* prevent oil from properly lubing up the diff or something..

 

Lol since nobody has ever had that issue I can't see it being a problem.

If that were true(and the oil sat in the diff perfectly still) we would all have issues driving up or downhill for extended periods of time.
