I agree on the look for sure. Tacoma is the best looking truck out there imo, but in reality for the money you spend why buy a vehicle just for looks, it's what on the inside that counts.

I agree the market vary. You will never find a prerunner in the upper Northeast. 4WD Tacomas are all over the place.
The link Island posted has some pretty good debates going on though I must admit.
The OP is cali, there are no used vehicles in Cali (not counting Relik's jumping ziptied flying 2011)??.
    Ok then buy new.

I aggree that the Tacoma has issues, but all cars and trucks have issues. You might enjoy reading this thread from a Frontier forum

Well considering tacomas have among the highest resale value of any truck, at least here in the northeast they do. you will find that even an 05' or 06' tacoma isn't priced that far away from a brand new ones cost. Id say just spend the little extra money and get brand new.

Toyota has better mpg's. Part of my factor on picking the Yota. Like the seats much better on the Yota, like the size of the Yota better, it's a little bigger than the Frontier. The only thing the Frontier had was for the same price I could have gotten leather and a sunroof.

As far as new vs used, I looked at some used ones, but they were asking as much as what I got the new one for. I suppose I might have chewed them down a bit, but just didn't see them coming off as much as they did on the new ones.

Just know the dealer is going to provide sub-par service for annoying things (rattles, windshield noises, etc) regardless of new or used status.

My experience, with all makes and manufacturers, is that the dealer is about the worst thing you can do for any annoying problem. Beyond that, Toyota is a solid brand and whichever is best for you financially is the way to go. I like the no miles that comes with a new truck. Then the baggage, if any, is all on Toyota and the dealer can't go playing games like "that's what you get when you buy used" when you have a legitimate issue.

I bought my second Tacoma with 119k miles. It had service records for oil changes every 5k miles since new. I ain't scared of a used Tacoma that's been taken care of.

I got a decent deal due to the miles and I got the truck I wanted. I couldn't justify the price of a new Tacoma. Yes, they hold their value very well, but you still have to pay for it while you own it.

I love the idea of knowing exactly what and where my truck has been through, but hate the idea of knowing every scratch/ding/dent is from my doing.

just faced the same dilema. looked for a few months to find a manual trans 4x4 here in cali. they're out there but unless it has high miles they're priced pretty close to the new ones. I looked at plenty of trucks that had over 50k that were priced higher than what i payed for new.(granted i went for 2.7 base).
what the hell free oil changes for two years and i got to choose the color. hardest part is now i have to wait for the call from the dealer to go pick it up...

I drove nothing but Chevy since 1980. B-I-L had a 2013 4 door 4wd off-road, all that jazz, that he had owned for 9 months when he decided the market was healthy enough and he was getting back into to custom houses. I got it for what he owed, $25,400. Once I saw the $ people wanted for used (north of $30K), the loan value ($34.5k) and the 1.9% IR I bought it. Now I LOVE the thing and don't foresee going away from them in the future.

You read too much. New for me. Used Tacomas are too high. When I bought my 2009 I got TRD OR and factory tow on new one versus a 2008 model without and paid $1350 more for new. Rare Tacoma rebate helped.

Just some dumb regular crap everyone else has
I couldn't agree more! I sold my 2006 AC 4x4 SR5 with 60K + miles for $18K, I only paid $23K in 2006. It didn't have a lot of nice options, but it was in good condition. 8 years old and only $5k in depreciation. I would only buy new unless I got a heck of deal. My new 2014 DCSB 4x4 sport was only $30.5K, before taxes and what-not, I thought that was reasonable - and I didn't even shop around that much.

There's a simple guideline to follow:

Vehicles that hold their resale value - Buy new

Vehicles that do not hold their resale value - Buy used (or not at all)

Around here If a Tacoma shows up that you want on a dealers lot, you literally have to haul ass to the lot and snatch it up. When I got mine, there was already a guy looking at it when I got there.

One day is too long:D I got a friend who works at the dealer. When what I was looking for showed up, he called me, and I immediately grabbed it. I specifically wanted an access cab, automatic, TRD offroad. The demand for these trucks is absolutely crazy.

Had my eye on them for awhile after selling my '06. Made no sense to buy used. When a new one was a couple thousand more.
