just wondering if all I need to do is buy a map light rear view mirror and cut the headliner back for it to mount to the pre existing mounting screws? or do I need to drill my own holes and mount it myself?

I never can understand why the put no forward map lights or floor lighting in these 01-04 trucks?

Put a CPS self dimming, temp, compass on my 14. Just needed to run hot wire & temp. probe wire, then hang from the existing mirror mount. They also sell mirrors with map lights, dont see why you cant go that route, no drilling. Not familiar with 04 though.

well if I do things I want them to be or look like oem original equipt, not a fan of the look of aftermarket ad-on stuff

main thing I don't know is if the 01-04 cabs have the mounting screw holes there for it or not. its way too late after the fact to find out it needs to be "rigged" to work.

I already know I will have to run wires for it.

It will mount right to the mirror mounting screws it is all one piece

if you have a mirror you should be good to go.

Was this never a option ?? I can`t see not having run the harness to that point

as I understood it, in the 01-04 they went to the rear dome light only for some reason. maybe its just the package my truck has because I had no power windows or cruise control in it when I got it.

so your saying its just the mirror mounting screws only that holds it? I was under the impression there were two more screws on the outer edges of it where the lights go? I saw some on ebay that did not have a mirror, they were just the map light housing by itself. if I bought one like that, will my mirror fit right in it and mount correctly?

if the light just mounts from the mirror mounting screws then that makes things super simple.

I will start looking for a mirror/map light combo then

    thanks, great informative little thread

it seams like you need to get the 89-95 pickup/4runner lights to get the three switch, the 96 and later pickup/4runners that im finding all seam to be the 2 switch lights.

im sure other years have them, just not seeing them for sale so 3 switch lights must have been standard on the 89-95 years

Read post #8 in the link again. My "3 switch" is from an 01 Taco in matching Oak color. Also ordered the 2 extra matching screws.

I got that, but there are none for sale and im finding nothing at all out there for sale from tacos, so its very slim pickings out there, that's why im searching 4runner options.

I already bought one like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-Celi...Light-94-99-/231648462630?hash=item35ef530726 for the rear dome light and I need to make a trim surround for it so it fits because its too thick (1/2" recess) and the oem dome light is very thin low profile like 1/4" thick recess.

To mount the front map lights you do not need to use the mounting holes on the outer edges. The ones at the mirror base work just fine. You do have to cut the headliner to fit it though.

thanks, I assume I need to cut out more then just the square light socket recesses so im thinking I need to trim out a slightly smaller rectangle under the light bracket maybe 3/8" in from the edge of the cover so the headliner is not in the way.

but im guessing, and also hoping, that the factory pre drilled screw holes would be there if I wanted to add the outer screws though, at least im hoping so since it was an optional mirror light.

I mean I know I don't "have to" but once I cut the headliner for it, there is no going back so why would I not put those screws in if the holes are there?

And since you're doing that, might as well remove the headliner entirely and sound deaden the roof.

It's a pretty decent one. People who want the Lexus-esque quiet cab and audiophiles, will always deaden the roof skin.

I just cant see going that far, based on money or work involved.

my door and truck is still all in pieces after 3 weeks because its just too damn hot to work on it and at night the mosquitoes are big as chickens and will carry you off.

might finally be able to put the doors back together tomorrow because its supposed to be raining so it wont be 1000 degrees outside

Yeah, I posted doing that in jest.

Like I said, I just did my doors, rear wall and bits of the rear 1/4 panel and it made a huge difference.

I'll probably get a bug up my butt and do the firewall eventually. Although I do like hearing my engine as much as possible to hear if anything funny is going on in there.

I wondered about that because I do seam to hear most of the noise from the firewall yet no one really mentions it as needing sound proofing.

I would think the whole dash needs to come out down to empty shell to do it though, and I "assume" that's why its never mentioned seeing as how that's far more then the average person would ever be willing to tear apart.

My 2000 has the three switches the right and left map lights and the center switch for the dome light

Which I keep turned off .

I don`t need the flash of light opening the door.

would you go here and get the part number for it for me http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/q.html

nothing shows for mine except the non lighted mirror and it would be nice to have a part number for it, even though an oem one new is probably a ridiculous asking price

As near as I can tell it would be part # 87810-04070 then there is a two letter suffix to match your trim

It is under the interior mirror it comes with the mirror!!

It also looks like the cover /lens is another part # 81261-89104 again with a two letter trim color code

I hope that is of help .
