What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

WHAT year have to be the 4runner to fit into a 1st gen? Any restrictions? On my wish list for a 2000 TRD 4x4...thanks in advance for the info...

 

I'm not 100% but I think any year of 3rd gen 4runner will work assuming your truck as either a 60/40 bench or buckets. As always, double check before hand and measure to ensure compatibility.

I'm thinking I'll post up a more detailed thread in the next few weeks when I get the chance.

Can this be done on the later first gens? Say 2003? I don't remember there being enough room to put the shocks on the outside of the springs.

 

Should be no different on all years just as long as the tire is spaced out enough to clear shock when articulating and shock itself is positioned to not hit leafs.

 

I gots to do this. Any rule of thumb on figuring out the backspace? Also do I need to backspace the front to match?

So what kind of stuff did you have to run to the parts store for? I should look for a thread on this I guess.

 

At least 2 inches minimum I would imagine to clear the wheels and tires. It is a lot of work.

What reason over inside frame mounting would you want to place them there for?

Well I'm still trying to decide what to do about the rear. I'm not hot about adding backspacers but it seems like the best way to get the longer shocks without having to punch a hole in my bed or lose the spare tire.

 

I went with a 3.5" bs wheel and about the skinniest 33 you can get, 255/85/16. I have about 2 inches between the shock body and tire. The reason is it put the shocks closer to the wheel therefore shock travel is more relative to wheel travel and the shocks do a better job of dampening.

 

My tip of the day is:
Put the total chaos pucks in the freezer right now and by the time you use them they will slip right in without any struggle. Might have to put a little bit of heat on the top of the spindles too. It will make your life a lot easier haha.

 

It's all on that paper underneath your bushings lol. Don't be me, read it all first haha. Specific dry lube, specific grease, anti-seize, you'll probably need a certain hole tap (you'd think paying as much for these they'd clear out the powder coat from the zirc fitting holes for you), ball joint puller to get the old one off the old UCA, we tried to use a ball joint press kit to pull out the ball joint from the spindle but it was too big so we had to take the whole spindle out and bring it to Napa to press it out. And that's about as far as we've gotten so far lol.

Installed a 4Runner glove box lock...


I had to rekey it so my key would work but it was really easy.

 

Installed leather 4Runner seats, big improvement over original seats.
I removed the bottom rails from the Tacoma seats and installed them onto the 4Runner seats, not as hard as I thought it would be. The 4Runner rails were just not right but after swiping rails they bolt up and operate perfectly.

 

Thats funny, its fun until you have to work on something under your truck and a bunch of dirt falls in your face.
