Thats possible, or it could be that Toyota does not care about Tacoma since it is bringing losses since 1995.
For those that work in corporate World in the product development know how hard is to get budget for improving product that is bringing nothing but losses.
    To me :
    #1 Drum brakes
    #2 Engine from cars
#3 pretty much Same body, and frame most of suspension components...

All are indication that Toyota wanted to make changes on the cheap with out investing into new Tacoma too much.

I hate on Seat-belt bracket Mike but I am guessing he just did not got money to redesign Tacoma.
So all his crazy defending old stuff could be because he can't tell us [corporate does not believe in Trucks in NA anymore so they gave us no money only access to parts bin from other models.] and that we should be happy Tacoma is still here, for at least another year.

Jeff Lange is running a thread with al lthe same parts
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/parts-catalog-finally-updated-information.387793/
Look how many core components are the same. even stupid 2 pinion carrier in front Diff is still there (you know the one that its giving everybody vibrations). Like Toyota could not get 4 pinion one from LC to let people lift with out crazy vibrations.

Who in the right mind would employ a caveboy shouting a bunch of nonsensical diatribes even when no one's consciously listening?

Frankly I can't wait for him to get rid of his weakass-vanmotor rusty-non-boxed-frame rear-drumtastic sorryass-of-an-excuse tacoshits and get a Nissan or Chevy diesel, so that he'd no longer stay in TWland and the rest of us can finally regain our sanity.

Yup. Poor Titan and/or Colorado Forum guys...

I almost want to join those forums just to hear him bitch about his injector issues and filter problems after running home brew canola oil from Freds Fry Joints through a modern Diesel without the proper filtering or trace water removal.

I can't hate on Seat-belt Mike that much. He has to work within certain constraints and takes orders from his superiors just like everyone else has to. I just think it was sleazy how he pulled the used car salesman role out when talking about how new the 2016 was.
I think it would have been more productive to just say that they chose to keep the same template for QDR and cost reasons. I would have been much more content with a somewhat bullshit explanation as compared to an utter bullshit explanation.

Most of the carry over parts are minor, basically the same frame or other things. Some things are the same but have no components in the system. Everyone pretty much knew this was going to be the case.

Us manual transmission enthusiasts would have kissed the manual offering goodbye (or still sticking with the 5-speed) in the new gen Tacoma if not for Mr. Sweers.

Sweers claims to a pro-manual transmission guy, so that might be true. Sounds like the throws on the new manual will be nice.

Did Toyota save a few bucks by keeping the rear drums? I don't know...maybe they did. Not sure if it was money saved because the drums are actually cheaper to manufacture and/or install or if they kept development cost down by not bothering with it. Doesn't seem like adapting the FJ's rear discs would be all that difficult or costly. But I'm not an engineer working on a tight budget either. Perhaps Toyota was just being lazy. Who's to say?

But if think every truck owner out there cares if their truck has them....well, you're way off base. Get outside of forums like TW and out into the real world and see how many people even know what rear disc brakes are....much less whether their truck as them. Bet 50% don't even know.

As for your "should have bought a minivan" comment? Really? That's just an asinine thing to say. If my Taco had rear disc brakes....great. But it doesn't and I couldn't care ANY LESS that it doesn't. They "do their job" just fine.

But then that poor squirrel would have to hear all that verbal diarrhea, as there'd be no "block user" button to click, and its little hands are too small to pull the trigger of a gun pointing at its own head.

I think he is tryign to be a car salesmen. So far not that good at it. From last financial report for Toyota.
They finally admitting problems, so when 2016 was "re-designed" seat-bracket Mike probably already was told to keep redesign to minimum in case Tacoma ends up like FJ Cruiser.
In 2014 Sequoia was going to be discontinued too. Somehow survived but not sure how long. Toyota NA truck division is getting a beating.

Whats funny is that also TMC is taunting in latest financial report that they saved 50 billion Yen on Eng. Ha ha I can see where :D

My FJ has rear disc brakes. When something weighs as heavy as 2 metric tonnes of bricks, it ain't gonna stop any faster with rear disc when more than 80% of the braking is done by the front brakes.

It’s asinine to think any other brand manufacturers/corporations aren't doing (or trying to do) the exact same things that Toyota is doing in terms of cost-cutting and increasing profit.

Dude, did you even go to school. When they state "cost reduction efforts" and then as a subset "engineering" as a positive number it means they SPENT 50 billion Yen on designing new methods for cost control . It's not a savings, it was money spent to save money later

You really have no idea what you are talking about.

What Toyota did was save more than that on expenses. Probably because of lower energy costs last year. I know our company reported lower expenses last year simply due to lower gas prices.

Just FYI, it looks like from that sheet Toyota will be speinding another 40 billion this year (420 million in USD if I calculated correctly) in NA in R&D then they did last year.

Everyone is dumping their fullsized SUV. The only reason they ever existed was because of the false market created in the early 90's when gas prices were low and interest rates were falling. As gas prices rise and pickups developed crew cab configurations the massive full size SUV is a dinosaur that will become a specialty market.

lol. Every thread can only go so long before it becomes a shouting match of those for and against the 2016 Tacoma. Can't wait until users actually have them in their garages and can talk about how they are and not how they think they might be.
