Pop and lock 5400 review

Just finished installing my pop and lock! Install was a breeze with their YouTube video. Lock works fine except there is no click when unlocking. Also handle is not as smooth as stock. When I lock it there is a felt click. Paint quality is so-so but I think it matches decently with my trd sport kit. All in all I highly recommend it in an attempt to prevent tailgate theft.

 

Jeep, I just ordered a 5400 on Tuesday and plan to install it this weekend. How long did it take you to install?

 

Installed 5400 several months ago.
Total install was less than 45 minutes.

I installed 3 PopNLocks on my Tacoma. The first one I bought. It lasted about 6 weeks. I RMA'd it and recieved another. Had to pay for return shipping. That one locked on me when the tailgate was up after about 2 months. I had to remove the back panel to unlock it. I returned that one and recieved another. The locking mechanism was very flimsy. Felt like it was going to fall apart. I installed it anyway, and the key was turning in the cylinder and wouldnt lock. I asked for a refund, but unfortunately the time limit expired. I was going to get another RMA'd, but was told I would have to pay for shipping both ways. I told the vendor to "Stick it". I never installed another POS PopNLock.

 

Mines been going strong for over 6 months and I am still happy with it and having the option to lock it. Definitely not the strongest thing out there, especially compared to OEM, but it'll do.

 

I can also vouch for the poor quality of these locks. Unfortunately there aren't any other great alternatives if you want a locking tailgate to use with a tonneau. I put on the 5400 and put on their electric power lock kit. It unlocks if I press the button on my fob twice. It locks when I press lock. So far no issues. Hopefully if it fails, the keyed portion will work so I can put the factory handle back on....

 

That's why I am hoping that the lock mechanism in the 2016 Gen 3 model can be adapted for Gen 2 use.

Ya I bought one, installed in, and returned it all in one afternoon. Felt so flimsy. My lock on my canopy door feels sturdy enough to discourage the easy break in. Either way, if someone wanted in, the pop and lock wasn't going to stop anyone.

 

Sounds like I may have wasted $75, oh well lets see what happens...

 

My experience with the same model # after 1 year of use:

Easy Intall. No issues with the actual locking mechanism but the tailgate handle gets stuck after it's been warmed up by the sun, not allowing you to open the tailgate unless you fiddle with it for 5 minutes. This is very frustrating and I'm considering switching back to the OEM handle.

Does Toyota even offer a locking tailgate handle?

 

Only for the Gen 3 Tacoma models, or Tundra.

 

I know. And I need to get a locking tailgate soon. I'm not looking forward to this.... especially with all the salt our roads see in the winter. I expect this thing to seize up.

Desperately looking for other options.

 

Hopefully there will be a way to make it compatible with the second gens.

 

mines is fine..so far. been about 6-7 months, but are you guys manhandling the lock/unlock? take it easy on it. also could be a installer error? ah dunno

PL5400. Still works after a year. Don't know why everyone's encountering problems with them. Maybe the environment they live in

 

I installed mine this weekend. Took 15 minutes. Everything looked solid and I can't see any flaws or issues with the aftermarket lock. I see no reason to manhandle the latch. I guess time will tell.

 

Im not sure what model mine is however the first I installed was broke and i finally got a new one... It feels like junk and is hard to lock but Its the only option so gotta have it!

 

So like other reviews, I thought my lock failed. When unlocked, pulling the handle did absolutely nothing. I was ready to send pop and lock a nasty email since my tailgate was now stuck closed. After playing with it a few times I figured maybe I need to move the actual tailgate a bit. I pushed it and heard a click, sure enough it opened after pulling on the handle again. Lesson learned, I must've not closed it hard enough the last time I used it, boom!
