Haven't officially bought it yet but I will soon and already have that itch. :) It's a 2006 2wd access cab 4cyl. auto. Yes I know it's already super slow and it kinda bums me out. But the only Tacomas I can find around here are almost new $25k used trucks or $10k 200k mile trucks. Since this will be a daily driver I need lower miles. However I hate the car tires and would love to go with some 15" black Cragers with 255/70/15 tires. Inspired buy a 5 lug build seen on this site. How much slower would this make an already very slow truck? And how bad would the speedo be affected from real world experience? I've seen the tire calculator and know OEM speedos always read optimistically. But I'm unsure how much it really would affect this in real life.

Dude if you're already bummed out about it being a 4 cylinder then keep looking. Buy what you want the first time so you won't be bitching about how slow it is until you trade for a v6.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
If you're in a hurry, buy a V6. The 5 lugger is the second slowest vehicle on the Planet; mine is #1. I don't think the speedo change will be much different. Go for it and good luck!

I wouldn't put heavy steel wheels on an underpowered truck. Go with light alloy wheels and look for the lightest tires you can find that meet your criteria.

If you are worried abou thow fast/slow the truck is.. dont buy a truck.. and if you want a fast truck buy a 5.7 tundra...
I bought mine because like you it was all I could afford.. it gets double the gas mileage of my dad's tundra, but for a trade off its not NEARLY as fast.
You just get used to it.

If you want bigger tires without losing all performance. Light weight alloys and P rated tires are your best bet. I went from 235 75 15s to 245 75 16s, and it feels better because the wheels and tires are much lighter.

I already have a 1986 Toyota Pickup 22R 4x4 5 speed. I'll be selling that once I get this. So yes, it's definitely faster then what I own now where 0-60 is measured in minutes/days/months. Maybe the 5 speed makes it seem better. :)

But a background to explain why. I've had the 22R for a few years and only drive it to the dump/Lowes kind of thing. I also have a 2000 Miata as a fun car. I also also used to own a very nice 2000 Lexus GS300 that some a$$hole decided to rearend and total the car. So instead of getting another car, I've decided to consolidate. The current truck has 269k miles and while it runs good, doesn't make a great daily driver.

Any idea where to source light weight alloys that won't break the bank and actually look like truck rims? Tire Rack and Discount Tire mostly shows what looks like car rims. Haha.

Good news for the 5 lug truck, most import car wheels will fit. Just find a set of stock alloys from a camry or the like and buy them cheap.

Actually, I noticed the truck run better immediately when the alloys were installed; feels lighter, handles better and brakes better IMO; something about rotating mass, I think.

Rotating mass makes a difference however, on a setup like this you wont notice a difference due to the nature of it being a truck. The stock steel wheels aren't THAT heavy considering a set of cast aluminum wheels are the same weight.

My example are going from wheels that weight 52 pounds each to wheels that weighed 34 each(including tire for both) and I didn't notice anything. I went back to my other wheels just because I liked how they looked better. This was on my camaro.
