Hey guys, I just picked up my 2010 TRD Sport Double Cab...I didn't get the locking rear diff button b/c I struck such a good deal on the particular truck I drove home with....

So anyways, I want to add that feature to my truck, does anybody know what it will take to do it and how hard it is and what it will cost????

    Thanks!

I'm not completely sure, but it's not gona be cheap and easy, it locks the rear diff, so your going to have to get into the diff and do some work, someone will chime in with more info though. do you do a lot of 4x4ing?

I don't do a whole lot of off roading, but I do go to the snow a couple times per year and I will use it to launch boats a few times per year and I dont want to be roasting my tires on the ramp.

Plus I thought the locking rear diff would be cool....

    Is it kinda excessive????

Your looking at about 1300-1500 dollars for a lightly used rear end to replace your OEM open rear. You cannot swap the internals for the E-Locker third. You will have to replace the entire rear axle assembly. Then you get to deal with the wiring.

An ARB setup would probably in the end be just as much but..IMO a better setup..

I forgot to add, If you want a locking rear, your best bet will be an ARB air locker. You will need an On Board Air setup and the locking carrier. Install for the carrier will be around 350 dollars from a reputable axle shop. Then you will plumb the air hoses that will run from your air tank/pump (under the bed usually) to the rear axle where the locker is housed. Your entire setup will be around 1200-1500 installed and will be much stronger than the factory E-Locker.

I know..I know I have said this before but every time I think of ARB..I always remember my custom built Dana 60 (Currie) with an ARB that was on my 99 TJ... I loved that axle.. :)

Ok, so the moral to the story is if I really wanted it that bad I shoulda just got the damn truck that had it on there.

Ok, I give up, the locker really didn't mean that much to me. I thought there may be an inexepnsive way to get it done.

Oh well. So how are they for traction guys????? I've had lots of Fords with limited slip before, do they work better than that? Do you turn off yoru limited slip buttons in the dirt or not???

I have found the rear locker to be essential for when I get stuck while in 4LO. That is to say I am in four wheel drive low and I am stuck. That's when I have found it to be invaluable. It has always got me out. Sometimes if there is an extreme rough patch I'll engage the locker to get me through and then I unlock when I am out of the rough spot.

I use it exactly as the Toyota manual says to use it.

You have a sport which has auto lsd . Unless your going to hard core offroad you should be fine. I have the offroad package and it suck's for me because the open diff spin's all the time you have got to lock it in 4L to get the locker to work now if you had auto lsd and a locker that would be much better. By the way I live in the Mountains. I see gravel and dirt road's all the time! Be happy with auto lsd.

Doesn't that throw a check engine light though?

A locker is not good in the snow. It tends to make the truck fish tail. I think there is an inexpensive but permanent way to do it(not recommended at all for your truck though). Maybe somebody will chime in but I think if you weld the two shafts together you'll have a permanent locker.

x2 on the locker mod. I use mine quite often in 2 hi and 4 hi.

I thought the gray wire mod was for 1st gens.

I didn't have a check engine light when I did the locker mod.

It doesn't state if your truck has 4wd or not. If it does you will not have an issue with traction. If it is only 2wd you will still probably be okay with traction control and auto lsd. The only time I have had to disable traction control is when I was stuck and I needed the tires to spin.

Sorry, it's 2WD. So according to all you guys I should be fine. Only time will tell huh??? I'll report back after trying to pull the boat up a wet launch ramp, and a little off-roading and a little snow. (not all in the same weekend of coarse!)

Thanks for all the replies guys!
