so uh, i just took my tacoma to jiffy lube for an oil change

looking at my receipt it says they used 4.8Quarts for my truck. isnt the 4.0 V6 supposed to have more than that?

 

That is why you don't bring your vehicle to anyone but Toyota... manual calls for 5.5 qts. Your truck is gonna blow up.

 

ya.. you got to watch out for them. i took my titan there once (it takes 6.5 quarts) and they tried to tell me that they put in 8 quarts. i then told them that they put too much oil and and i demanded that they drain it and put in 6.5 quarts as i stand there and watch.

the cashier went back to the "tech" and he said "oh ya... 6.5 quarts, right, that was it". i also had them check the oil level to make sure that there indeed was not too much.

in the end, they were just trying to rip me off for 1.5 quarts of oil.

Maybe some trucks are different. but my manual says to do 4.8 quarts. i just do 5 since its easier to put the whole thing in. when i check the dipstick the oil is at the perfect height.

 

you have the 4.0 v6?

 

I don't think your engine will blow up or anything if its short one quart, just check the dip stick and see what it is at. If It's low, then take it back and have them put more of it in.

 

This is why you do it yourself.......so you know it's done right.

 

ive never changed my own oil before

 

i had the firestone change my oil.( i had a free oil change there). the tech never changed to oil in a taco before. when he took of the oil filter he did not attach a hose to the oil catch. and some oil got on the belt. truck was turned on and oil went flying. i wasn't happy when i got home to check oil level. oil was everywere. they had to clean my hole engine compartment. i have one more free change but i am just going to do it my self anyway.

 

I think next time im just gonna figure out how to do it myself.

 

now if i could just figure out how to get my damn spare tire down so i can fill it up with air and get my tpms light off, that would be great lol

It's easy!! Atleast you have a manual...and you shouldn't have any issues with draining that instead of the engine oil.

Gotta start somewhere.... and now's the perfect time to learn. The more you know about how to maintain your own truck, the better off you'll be (especially if you don't have any trustworthy garages around)

 

i put a 5 qt jug in my 05 4.0 V6 and always get right below the max fill line?

but i still agree that you should do your own oil change. BUT, make sure you know which bolt to unscrew, as people (somehow, its still beyond me!!) remove the trans bolt and not the oil bolt.

 

is it labeled oil bolt?

 

no, and no offense by this, but if your asking this question, maybe you should keep taking it to jiffy lube.

if you cant tell the difference between the oil pan and the trans pan, just keep taking it there. you can also search around here for a write up on an oil change, im sure there are a few. again, not trying to be mean, just dont want you to get in over your head and then be screwed cause you need to tow your truck to the dealer to perform a trans flush and fill...which can run over $200.

 

it is very easy man. you should have no problem changin it yourself.
