I would like to install a block heater for this winter and what little information is available on the OEM block heater says that you need to install this in a freeze plug and it appears people in general complain about this style of heater leaking.

so the question is, anyone here have a block heater? Is yours leaking? If its aftermarket what do you have and how does it perform?

    So I found this
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/successful-install-of-block-heater.18890/
I've driven 5 miles with no leaks, so it looks like we're good so far.
The linked page describes the install pretty well. Drain the coolant from the radiator AND the engine. Take off the passenger side wheel to get to the freeze plug. It is the second one from the front.

I just used a hammer and a long screwdriver to punch out the plug.
Then install the block heater in the position in the instructions. Mine specified the 2 o'clock position.
The instructions that came with the unit were a bit dated, so here is a new list. I think it only goes up to 2010, so you might want to ask your dealer/mechanic. They are the same engines though, so I don't see why it would be different.
Sorry no pictures, I don't have very good internet out here but I will work on getting some posted.

I had found that info previously but in general I've read the freeze plug type trend to leak which is why I'm hesitant

If a freeze plug type of block heater is prone to leaking, then a freeze plug is prone to leaking as well... which they typically do not.
The vast majority of block heaters install in a freeze plug, and I've *never* heard of one leaking. Just make sure that you clean up the hole properly and use grease generously when installing.

So it's not so much the design as it is improper install? I'm guessing people don't clean the mounting surface very well?

Yeah, that is what it comes down to. You have an o-ring seal between the block heater and the block. If the surface isn't properly clean and smooth and lubricated, it isn't going to seal well.
