Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
    I have a 2015 TRD Pro, 6spd, supercharged.

The stock clutch has 9500 ish miles on it today, I installed the supercharger at 3k ish miles and I have almost 5k miles worth of towing on the truck.

This thread is not a question about driving wrong etc, I have driven hundreds of thousands of miles in Manual vehicles and towing with them. Driving is not the issue.

The issue is under full load my stock clutch slips, I don't know if I got a weaker than average pressure plate stock or if the stock clutch is just not very capable of real use with the supercharger.

Whatever it is an upgrade is in order, Toyota is not going to warranty the stock parts. Well they could but its a 500 dollar gamble to let them take it apart and investigate the "cause" based off the technicians personal opinion.

I am trying to decide on options here so I would like to ask the great people of TW for opinions.

Light flywheel, Toyota says the flywheel is not serviceable. The stock flywheel is overpriced so if it needs resurfaced which is likely I either resurface it and see how the pedal feel is, replace it with a new oem part or go aftermarket. URD has a steel flywheel that is lightweight, I have never gone light in a truck, let alone one that sees truck use so can anyone speak with some experience on this? Is it a bad idea?

The clutches I am looking at now are the URD Stage 3+ and the centerforce dual friction. I have run a few centerforce clutches in my older trucks and they have been great. URD and SPEC seems to have good reviews but the URD is cheaper.

I will do the work myself so its only cost in parts and a little time.

I am not concerned with a little extra pedal effort, the Tacoma is pretty soft anyway. I do need a manageable engagement for towing, and I would like to stay away from kevlar as from my experience it has a tendency to glaze. I mean that when the clutch is ridden for a hill start with a load or backing a trailer with our tall reverse gear etc that kevlar doesn't respond to well.

this is the only clutch I have ever had fail without some extreme abuse.

My 2013 6spd was not supercharged but it was much more abused, at one point the clutch in it was smoked (made a nice cloud) when I was on the road with a friend driving and he had never towed with the weight we had etc. I thought it would be toast, but I never had any issues for 15k after that.

My pedal feel is still good, it still drives good except if I am in a higher gear and hit boost it will slip the clutch. Its been doing this for at least 2k miles so I have just been careful to not let it go. I could drive it like this for another 50k but where is the fun in that? And it makes my truck useless for towing. . I bought the supercharger for more power, passing power fun power and towing power. Its great, except now I can't use it.

Torpd has shared his experience with upgraded clutches, and I would like to see what everyone else has seen!

Thanks all and have a great day!

No I didn't get any feedback on people's experience yet with towing etc and the light flywheel, so I didn't order it. Still open to it lol.

Also the URD disk has a competition clutch sticker, so I would assume that is who builds them to spec for URD

I have the URD stage 2 clutch with the lightweight URD flywheel and am very happy with it. I tow a race car and trailer which is about 3800lbs total and have no issues. Since I've installed the new clutch I have driven approx 50k on the truck with about 8k of that towing. The reason I did the clutch was the truck had 100k on it and I needed to do the throwout bearing upgrade so I figured while I was in there I'd do everything. My only minor complaint is when I first did this the rev hang was pretty bad for a couple days until the computer learned the new flywheel. Pedal effort is a little more but not significant. My gf hardly noticed so she says but my gravel driveway tends to disagree:) Other than that, everything has been great.

    Cheers, James

Thanks! Glad its working out, I really debated it and still am.

The lightest thing I tow is my empty trailer, and generally its 5-6k the truck does great! I just would be super ticked off at myself if I did the lightweight flywheel and it went downhill.

With my 2008 I went through the process 3 times, replacing the clutch each time because the throwout bearing failed. This was before I knew there was a sleeve :)

And now here I am with a weak pressure plate at 9k. Oh well, it is what it is.

I understand the woman thing. When I first started dating my wife, we went somewhere in my truck, I remember getting there and wanted to drink. The lady said she would DD, well she said shes great at driving a stick and its a truck, whats it gonna hurt? So 10 or 12 into a 6 pack as they say I am riding in the passenger seat of my truck wondering how bad the damage is going to be, pretty confident that the RPMs and the stratosphere are getting closer. She said she was having fun she hadn't driven a manual since her turbo TC. Luckily it didn't do any damage, the wrist pins didn't grenade and she knows the difference between a truck and a "sports" car now :).

KROG, one thing I forgot to mention is definitely give URD a call. He is great to deal with and will give you good advice as it applies to your setup. I have his cat back exhaust now as well and so far everything I have purchased has been excellent quality.

I did actually, talked to Gadget who was very helpful and off his recommendation I went with the stage 3. I did not ask about the light flywheel though, probably just have to call him again!

Its great so far. Mine was not worn very bad, and the bearing is the same part, however with the sleeve and deleting the clutch accumulator valve it is much smoother!

Yeah that's what it worrying me, my bearing has been chirping for 2 years and if the shaft is worn to bad the sleeve really wont do anything for me. The only fix would be a new bell housing right?

no the sleeve should work, thats the purpose. I chose to do it because I don't want to need to do it in the future.

I believe the quill is part of the front housing on this trans, vs older asian trans where the front bearing retainer had the quill and was an easy replacement, but of course those weren't the problem then anyway.

The true test will be towing, the shudder could smooth out or it could get worse when towing.

I have to say, I have run a dual friction centerforce clutch in other trucks before, and while the lockup was solid in those it wasn't as rough as this stage 3.

Of course the clutch could break in and change feel, which so far for daily driver I don't have a complaint. But I am a little concerned with towing example being loaded hill starts etc. If the shudder gets worse then, I could see it being very hard on thrust bearings and the like and I would change it out for something else.

I have seen a few old yota's trash engines because of the clutch lockup being too violent.

My 85 has a ceramic puck disk, similar to the ceramic on one side of this one and an 1800 lb flywheel. Pedal effort is higher in the 85, power is more than twice as high in the Tacoma however the clutch feel is almost identical which surprised me.

My 5th gear still shifts funny, grinds when my wife drives it. Its been doing it since almost new, doesn't grind for me but its not smooth like the other gears. I reckon Toyota will just tell me to fuck off again, so I doubt its ever getting fixed. I am burned out on Toyota customer service.

I switched to MT90 and that did make a difference, when I drained the trans pulled the fill first and didn't get a drop, so I strongly suspect it wasn't full in the first place.

I like the stage 3, and I hope it works out for the best. The shudder is all that worries me, I only get it from a dead stop of course.
