Problem when taking turns...

I am having a problem that I hope someone can help me identify. I just installed 2.5" Coilover and had the alignment done. When I am taking an agressive turn (right turn from what I have noticed) the truck beeps and feels like I am driving on gravel. I am not sure what this is. From what I have read it sounds similiar to what should happen when the brakes over heat, but it only happens in sharp turns, or maybe what the anti lock brakes would do. Any help would be much appreciated. I am taking it in to the dealer tomorrow, but sometimes I think there is more knowledge on this site then in the shop.

Need more information....

Did you change wheels & tires? If yes...what size, backspacing, etc.

What exactly do you mean by 'beeps'?? Is there something in the cab electronics that are beeping at you?

When you are turning and this is occuring, are you using the brakes? Can you see or feel the brake pedal pulsating?

 

I did change the wheels and tires. Changed wheels to the FJ wheels (16x7.5 - 4.5BS) and tires to 265/75/16 load range E. But I had the wheels and tire on for a week before the suspension change and never noticed a problem. The load range wheels do make me wonder though...Yes somthing in the cab electronic beeps. Also, I think somthing red lights up, but I can't see because I am turning.Once I was using the brake, but another time I don't think that I was. I drove a long windy distance using the break frequently, but only occurs in a constent turn. Not sure if it the brake or not, but defenitly pulsating.Thanks again for any input.

 

Hmm...

Same thing happened to me about 2-3 times since I installed a 3" lift. Guess we'll wait and see what the tech guys think.

Ok I was able to duplicate this again on my way home. I was taking a turn (freeway on ramp) without use of brakes. Also, I did see the light that came on. It was the car with the squiggly lines under it. I don’t have A-trac so it must be the auto LSD. But why would this happen? How can I resolve this problem? Did I do somthing wrong with my suspension?

 

Same thing happens when I take relatively sharp curves.

 

This might have to do with the wheel sensors.

I haven't ever looked myself, but there should be some wiring & plugs going to the sensors at each wheel. Jack up the front end and turn the wheels to each LOCK (both). Crawl underneath the truck (make sure its properly supported) and check the wiring & the plugs. Unplug them & plug them back in. Make sure the connections are clean. When the wheels are turned fully, make sure they're not pulled too tight or kinked. Check both sides.

If you find some that are too tight, simply follow the wires - they might be attached via Toyota clips that you might have to cut in order to prevent it from pulling too tightly.

 

Are these the tire pressure sensors?

 

Thanks for the input. That seems logical because on a banking turn one side is being compressed and the other is being extended. Possible causing an issue with sensor connections. I havnt had time to inspect in the daylight, so I have dropped it off at the dealer. I will keep ya'll posted.

 

Nope....

The Tire pressure sensors are in your wheel. They're a part of the valve stems.

The sensors I'm referring to - are wheel speed sensors. It sends info to the ECM about the 'speed' your wheels are going. The ABS (& other) systems use the wheel speed sensors so they know when the wheels aren't moving, slipping, etc.

 

Nothing from the tech. Everything checks out to them. Could not even duplicate the problem. I am thinking it has to do with the stance of my truck. I have the front about an inch higher then the back (stock). When I am making a banking right turn the front passenger side lifts and I think enough to cause the truck to engage VSC? I have done some reading on the VSC/LSD/Trac and I am going to try the different options where I no the problem happens. Maybe upgrading the rear shock would help the balance the front and the back?

What are your guy's measurements?

Mine are (with 265/75 tires):

Driver Passenger
Front: 37.75" 38"
Rear: 37" 37"

 

If they couldn't duplicate the problem - then they probably didn't check anything.

Did you check the wiring & plugs at each front wheel? Sometimes all you need to do is unplug the connectors and plug them back in. We had the same problem in our corvette, kept tripping the traction control lights at tight turns....

 

So right you are. They did nothing. I am going to try and check the sensors this weekend. Turning the vsc off did not even work.

 

And again, I'm not familiar with the tacomas system....but I think the wheel speed sensors are also a part of ABS.

I have the very same problem. I live in the mountains and drive mountain roads to get everywhere. Sometimes as I take a turn the (VCS?) engages on the outside front wheel applying the ABS brake on that wheel. I just had snow tires put on my new 2009 Tacoma Double Cab and that's exactly when the problem started. The new tires are 265/75R16 load rated E, replacing the stock 245/75R16. Please post a solution if you find one. Thanks.

 

There is a lot of talk about this in the suspension section. Do a search for "Lift with VSC" and one of the guys posted a PDF with how to recalibrate it. If I knew how to link I would have done a link on here.

Great info I will look into this as well. The thread just seams to die. I checked the sensors and gave the wiring a little slack. I did not unplug them because I was a little afraid of breaking them. I also noticed something that could be a problem in the picture below. I don't know how to explain it, but hopefully the picture will speak for itself.

 

I was finally able to get the tech at the stealership to do this for me. Why does everything have to be a pain in the a$$ with them? I will let you all know if this did the trick as the probelm was happening everyday for me.
