CB Ashtray Mounting

For those of you that mounted a cb in the ash tray, how'd u secure it in there? Friction alone isn't enough and it slides back and forth.

Also, how'd u get the antennae wire inside? I wanted to go through the window weather stripping but idk how to get it off or if that is the best option.

Did you remove the entire ash tray including the shell?
It's been a long time since I did that myself...

I use a material called DUAL LOCK made by 3M - you can get it at Radio Shak I think. It's awesome shit!

 

Yea make sure you take off the mounting plate that the ashtray mounts on, its held by 2 screws i think. then I used double sided carpet tape, been on there since like the beginning of summer this year and hasnt fallen or gotten loose

 

I took off the metal plate with the light (i think thats what you mean). I cut out the plastic in the back to allow it to slide all the way in. Tape is a good idea, i didnt think of that.

 

Mine doesn't slide around much, but I'm going to try either the 2 sided tape or velcro.

 

Whenever I first mounted my radio (520XL) I used velcro.

Whenever I got a new antenna and put everything back in, theres nothing securing it other than a snug fit.

As for the coax...

Where are you mounting the antenna? My first was a 5' FS-2 that I mounted on my rear bumper. Drilled a hole in the bumper then ran the coax along the frame, into the cab where the little rubber grommet is (I did pass side)

For my new antenna (wilson 1000 mag mount) I drilled a hole in the 3rd brake light surround and it the coax fits snugly between the surround and the roof.

 

right now i got a cheepo walmart antennae just for now cause i wanted to get it working. it actually gets pretty good range. bout 2 miles from me to my buddys house and we get perfect reception talkin. its magnetic and mounts on the roof. i ran it up into that grommet on the driver side, under the bench and under the center console.

any of u guys with a first gen get the radio back flush? i cant but mine all the way in without bending the antennae cable too far

 

Mine's sticking out about a half an inch with a 90* coax connector. Without the connector it was sticking waaay too far out. Might want to look into one of them.

I got mine at a TA (Truckstops of America)

I'm willing to bet any truckstop that has a CB section will have it.

Radioshack sells CB stuff, might want to check to see if they have em if there is one local to you.

If all else fails, you can order one online.

Could you post a PIC of this? I still need to mount my K-40 Magnetic mount and want to do the same spot. I would like to see how you did it...

I didn't actually drill a hole in the part. I made an indentation that was about the same size as the cable, then bolted everything back up (had to pull headliner anyway) and then used some silicon around the seams.

 

yeah im interested to see this too. i want a more permanent solution because it looks sloppy from the outside. looks damn good in though

and yeah ive seen those 90 degree curves. i was imagining a cable with it preattached. again, thats for pointing out the obvious solution i couldnt think of

 

I drilled to the side because it was the easiest way to get the coax into the cab there.

I'm thinkin of getting a different antennae (firestik II) and mounting it kind of inside of the tailgate channel if that makes sense.
I saw someone with it. it goes in between the tailgate and the side of the bed and screws under the cord that hold the tailgate.

anyone know what this is called or where i can find one?

What kind of cb radio do you have mounted ? I'm looking into installing in the ash tray too. I want to buy the right one to make it fit. Thanks

 

I have a Cobra 19 Ultra lll. I took out the entire ashtray assemblage completely; you'll discover there is a bit of a lip to the plastic on either side of the space. My previous radio (Midland something or other that fit in there, too) was held in by friction which didn't always work well on some trails resulting in falling out too many times and going the way of the DODO. On the Cobra I simply put the mounting screws (for the mounting brackets) about 1/2 way in so the screws sit on top of the lip of the plastic. Fits quite snugly. However, the antenna cable does push a little hard on the vent pipe (for A/C and heat) behind it but, not too terribly bad. Won't cause any issues. I ran the antenna wire out the firewall and to the hood mount antenna. So simple that even I did it in about an hour.
