Antifreeze question?

Hi Everyone,

Im about to (DIY) flush my radiator for the first time on my truck. "Don't worry I won't burn myself...lol". My question is what antifreeze is best for my 2011 toyota tacoma? I figured I'd get the premixed 50/50 antifreeze that will make easy to pour and skip the mixing of water and antifreeze all together. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

a lot cheaper and the same color and spec's. I got it a Car Quest for $14

You should get this too - probably cheaper some where else - I don't remember where I got mine.

I don't flush - just drain radiator and fill it every 30k - since they recommend 100k I figure 30k is fine.

Make sure you flush the cooling system several times to get out all the old coolant. If you had green coolant and going to use red or vise versa you need to get all the previous coolant out because the chemicals are incompatible and could cause problems for your engine in the future, or so I have been told.

I usually do initial flush with garden hose and one or two more with "distilled" water (glacier water machine in front of supermarkets). Also use pure water when mixing coolant to minimize mineral build up in cooling system.

Premixed antifreeze is a waste of money. Why pay for half a gallon of tap water?

 

Crom, Did you do a whole flush out first or just drain and add?

 

I drained the radiator, and block drains on both sides of engine. There is a writeup posted somewhere. Pretty easy to do. Getting rid of the used coolant was the hardest part. And block drain bolts were tightened by Hercules himself at the Toyota factory.

 

Once a year, open the radiator drain cock and let it drain. Close cock and refill with 50-50 mix. Repeat next year, and next year, and the next... pretty simple ain't it?

 

As an hvac guy I can tell you to spend the whole $1.50/ gallon and buy distilled water. The hardness, chlorine, and minerals in tap water is not cool. It keeps me in business with boilers, valves and pumps. I use Toyota Oem antifreeze and drop and fill the radiator every 50k. The cost is higher, but it is a peace of mind thing

 

Go to Walmart & you can get distilled water for $0.88, along with a gal of straight AF & you are good to go!

I'm inclined to agree. I have used the Zerex equivalent of Toyota SLLC because it's $7-$8 a gallon cheaper than the latter and a 1/2 mi. away at a local McParts store. Recently I saw the 50K Toyota Red coolant at a dealership. Full strength. Makes 2 gals. of coolant. Toyota's SLLC is supposedly good for 100K, but I'm not one who would ever push coolant or any other fluid that long.

Use what works for you.

 

It's not a bad idea depending on where you're located and whats in your tap water. For example where I love has super "hard water" where it leaves calcium deposits on pool tile and drinking glasses develop a cloudy substance on them too if used for a while. I wouldn't want to put that in my engine. The premixed stuff is a safer bet.

 

The solution to hard water is a gallon of distilled water for about a buck at your local grocery store.
