oil filter 2011 V6 surprise

Recently I passed my free oil and filter deal at the dealer where I bought my Tacoma new 4 years ago. "Rehab" only has 13,000 miles on it, but when I use it it gets used rough. Anyway, The maint req light on the dash was bugging me so I changed the oil, air and oil filters recently. (Thanks to this forum I was able to douse that warning light when I was finished)! Two things: 1. After I got the first free oil change 3 years ago I marked the filter. When I got the 2nd free change at 10k I forgot about the mark and didn't check. When I changed oil this time the filter was stuck on there good and I had to use a plumber's chain-wrench to get it off. The mark I had made was still there but somebody had initialed the canister. (Easy way to "change" a filter scumbags)! 2. When I finally got it off there was only a dribble of oil in it, which made that pan Toyota puts under the filter nice, but a pussy piece of paper towel would have done the job. Is this lack of oil running all over the place because I did the filter 2 or 3 days after the oil change because I needed to improvise a way to get it unstuck? The vehicle was unused and vertical for 3 days. Is it normal for the oil to drain out of the filter in that short a time?

Next question: what do you think I should I do about the dealer who cheated on the filter change? 60 miles away from my rural dead-end road. Mainly, though, as an 80-year-old pickup pilot I have to say I have never encountered a filter which wasn't preggers, and gave birth with a gush of oil upon removal. WTF?!

 

do the change yourself from now on and use a K&N oil filter. They have a nut on the top so you can use a wrench to get it off. Also i wouldnt wait 10K to change the oil. I change mine every 3K with Royal Purple oil and everytime i change my oil i change the filter, and drain bolt. hand tighten the filter until it wont go anymore thats tight enough. no need to mark the spot everytime.

 

Be sure to lube the filter gasket. I mount new filter by hand until you feel the gasket touch the base, then 1/2 turn more.

OEM toyota filters.... you can get 10 of em off ebay with drain plug gaskets for 45 bucks.... OEM filters come with the gasket pre-lubed and ready to go, and are one of the best quality filters you can buy. (best internal design and most filtering media area)

I wouldnt worry to much about the state of the oil filter.... nothing you can do about it really. Just replace it with a new one, fill her up with the proper amount of oil n call it good.

 

Sounds like they found your mark and were playing games with you.

 

In my experience the OEM filter's anti-drainback valve have been pretty effective. i.e. old filter feels noticeably heavier than the new one because of the oil inside. If I poke at the ADBV flap with a screwdriver, the oil in the filter pours out.

 

To answer your questions yes if you let the vehicle set most of the oil will run out of the filter. It will do that over night. I have the same engine and have had the same experience from just setting over night.

As to you next question since you live a good distance from them I would call them and ask for the service manager and politely explain what you found. If you feel you have not gotten satisfaction I would also ask for the owners name and contact information and politely contact him/her and let him/her know what you found and explain your conversation with the service manager. Next if no satisfaction I would post reviews on their web site if possible of what you found and your experience with them after you informed them. Also post reviews anyplace on the net where they keep reviews on that dealership. Lastly contact the better business bureau and make a complaint if you feel they are not dealing with the situation.

By the way they owe you two free oil changes with filter.

First off, K&N filters are trash.

Second, you're wasting an incredible amount of money on oil. You know guys get to 400k+ going 8k-12k miles b/w oil changes on Mobil1, right? The old '3k oil change' is literally from 50 years ago, and there is absolutely no reason or necessity to do that anymore. You can easily go 10k+ on modern oil - especially synthetic.

How are k an n filters trash. They have same internals as Mobil 1 and other quality filters. They just have a but on top. There is an article somewhere showing the different internals. I'll try and find it.

Thats a ton of wasted money. First off, Royal Purple is really expensive...especially to change it every 3k. For something that is no better than Mobil1, its a huge wasted expense.

Secondly, K&N filters are overpriced and aren't even the best on the market.

I use the Purolator Pure1. Whole thing is grip tape, so its easy to turn, great filtering, and half the cost of a K&N.

To use Royal Purple and a K&N filter every 3k is like flushing money down the toilet. My wife's dad has this truck too. Dino oil every 5k, and whatever oil/filter package is on sale, he's gone over 200k problem free miles.

 

X2 on royal purple every 3K, thats what I've been doing since i got my truck with 80K miles on it, I'm now at 102K

 

That comparison doesn't even mention Toyota filters. Have you ever even considered a Toyota filter? For your reference, it has TWICE the filter media of a K&N filter. TWICE the filter. K&N loves to sell you that it's somehow a 'superior product' - don't buy the hype. It's genius marketing to get people to pay more. It's trash.

I can't even believe what I'm reading - this is an incredible waste of money. I bet when you drain your oil, you MAY have used 1/3 of its intended life, depending on your driving habits. This is oil marketing at its best right here.

 

there is a huge write up on some tw thread here about lots of oils, royal purple was one of the best, and its an average cost here, and i don't mind paying an additional $2-$4 on a royal purple filter compared to that orange brand(i forget the name)

 

I agree it's one of the best - no argument there. It also could easily go 10k miles b/w changes. I would encourage you to send it out to get analyzed. I would bet $20 that you're using less than 1/3 of its use. You're just changing it WAY too early. Its quality, which you're 100% correct about, is the exact reason that it can last so long.

See my thread posted up towards the top of this thread about a guy who ran Mobil1 for 400k miles at 8k-12k mile intervals. His truck is still running strong.

That's literally what the oil was made for.

 

We all know its good stuff...but 3k to avoid a risk? Thats a lot of extra money to avoid spending extra money. Especially considering the product is designed to last twice that long almost at minimum.

 

It's also worthy to note that '15 Tacos with V6s are rated at 10,000 mile oil change intervals, per the manual.

4-cylinders are rated at 5,000 mile oil change intervals.

Even the manufacturer doesn't recommend the 3k / 3 mo oil change interval anymore.
