Went in before I knew about the TSB for needle bearing and they said rears trans mount wAs all they could do under warranty and ordered parts. I came home found this thread and and TSB and called to ask about them about it, the service writer was rude and said he can't just order parts based on something I find on the Internet. So when I went back in to have them put the mount in I brought a printed copy of the TSB and handed it to him, they did the mount and said that the bearing was fine and had nothing to do with the vibrations. So I contacted the service manager and he apologized and told me to come back in and they would work on a fix and even gave me a loaner car. they called a few hours later saying rear driveshaft, ordered, few days comes in so they install. Call me and say ok that didn't fix the issue so it needs a front cv, ordered comes in and repaired and tell me it's driving great. I pick it up and as soon as I hit 40mph it does the same thing. So I call back and the service writer says oh there's no way it's doing it the tech said its fine and they replaced the bad parts, I explain its still doing it and he says well the tech drove another Tacoma and it did it to so its normal. And of course I remind him that the tech originally said its not normal and shouldn't be happening. So if it wasn't for xmas the truck would be back and I would be making sure the manager has them do the TSB. I'll update again once that happens.

 

Got ya! Mine is an 08 with no warranty. I told them about the tsb. He kinda laughed n said there is nothing for that part. Just the frame and springs. So instead of dealing with the Stealership . i just orderd the bushing from ECGS seems to have good results so far.

 

That's a different story. The TSB says it is only good while under warranty.

Took my 2015 to dealer for the front end noise, first he told me it was the bug deflector making the growling noise and the smog pump as well, had to leave before I choked him out. Truck has 1400 miles, going to another dealer.

 

Bug deflector?!? WTF? I could see that causing a whistle maybe... But not growling! And if the smog pump is "growling" it needs replaced.



It's not like they have to admit fault or something....

 

Just got my cat replaced...tried to get the needle bearing SB done...they said it wasn't making any noise...I said otherwise...guess I'll install the ECGS bearing that I've been sitting on. I have a 12 RC 2.7 stick

 

Try another dealer maybe if possible for you

 

Wow long thread...didn't read through all of it but I just replaced the needle bearing in my front diff. I did some searching on tools used and apparently the bearing can be pretty stubborn to remove. Worse yet it can break apart and some of the needles drop into the diff. I rented this tool from Autozone which is a slide hammer with expanding collets. The largest one fit perfectly. Unlike normal slide hammers with 2 or 3 fingers this one grabs the bearing full circle. It came out almost perfectly intact and was pretty easy to remove. I attached photos of the slide hammer set as well as the old bearing after removing it. You can see a slight bit of a bend to the edge of the bearing shell.

This is awesome! I just watched a youtube video on how this works and it seems like it'll do the trick really well. Did you have enough room for the slide hammer to get it out? What all did you remove?

What did you use to drive the new bushing in??

 

Anyone have the install tool and driver I can use?

 

Gonna be doing this install in the next few weeks. Anybody know what kind and how much differential oil I need? Found this on Amazon but have no idea if this is what I need.

75w-90 is oem oil, there's a diy on draining and filling the differential on tacomaworld. I think it's 1.6 quarts but check the diy first

75-85 is oem, but it can be hard to find so most everyone just uses 75-90. It's generally not a problem to go lower on the first number and higher on the second. Your going to need 1.6 or so quarts, one quart equals about .95 liters, so it might be cheaper for PVT Pablo to get two quarts lucas or mobile1 or some other quality 75-90 synthectic.

Both of which, like you already mentioned, are available through Autozone's Loan-a-tool program, which I have used numerous times. This is the route I will go when I replace my bearing.

I'm posting mainly to keep track so I have an easier time finding the information when I need it...lol.

 

Took mine in for the needle bearing TSB a few weeks ago. The tech claimed he couldn't hear or feel any vibration (which as with everyone else started once I lifted the truck). I told them I was shocked they couldn't feel it as it is definitely pronounced and can be felt. They called me back a few hours later and said they ordered the parts for the TSB. Took my truck back yesterday to have to work done. Dealer called later in the day.....they don't have the tool to pull the existing bearing. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! They put me in a luxurious 2016 Corolla for now. Hope they get it done today.

As a lot of others have said....if you have this issue and you are still within the power train warranty period.....HAVE THE DEALER DO THE WORK! It's free, it's a NEW bearing (they aren't simply swapping with the same part) and if it comes back....then maybe look at the ECGS fix. But if it works and it's free, why wouldn't you? Also, be certain to take the TSB with you and insist on the repair. My service advisor obviously wasn't familiar with the TSB or the issue and was hesitant at first but when I insisted the problem is there and this is the fix I want, they did it.
