Anyone else crazy enough to go snow camping, either on snowshoes or before the snow gets too deep, car camp? I try to get out year round, I collect old lanterns and camping/backpacking stoves. 22 lanterns is all, but I have around 140 stoves from around the world. So many, I have to get out a bunch, using two or three stoves each trip so as to get a little use from them. I'm fortunate too, that I live a quarter mile from Forest Circus land and close to other areas for camping/backpacking/off roading on the Plumas NF in N Kalifornia. A few pics from the last month, temps down to the teens F to single digits F. Last pics are from along the Ranger Route in Lassen Volcanic NP. Lassen Park is a little over an hour away.

Yes! I'm actually heading to the Laurel Trail in the Allegheny Mountains this weekend with some friends. We park, hike in about three miles, and stay in these things:
Tarp off the openings and a fire keeps it fairly toasty.

Last year, we had 12"-18", but it didn't snow while we were there. This year there's only a small ~6" base, but we're expecting 12"+ of fresh snow during the day on Saturday. Should be interesting! I'll post some pictures when I get back.

Thank you guys. Good to see. I saw my first rack top tents last summer at Gold Lake, which is north of Truckee, CA. I have cheap firewood, nice to not have to buy a bundle at a time. Wood cutting permit, chainsaw, I'm good to go. Since I'm retiring in a few months, I'll need to stock up on more firewood as I work out of town now, so have not burned much wood the last 11 years.

Nice, I've been waiting for quite a few years for the snow to get deep enough that I can dig a shelter. A couple friends did it a few years ago, all I did was dig a shallow pit to erect my tent in.

I bought a shaped tarp to use on my vacation two years ago, ok if no wind and can set up on flat ground. If you have to set it up per the wind, another issue then and add some high Sierra rain storm. I'm back to a tent for summer use, little over a pound for a ZPack tent. Digging in snow is a lot of work, watched my friends dig for quite some time, the only reason I dug in a little was so I'd have something to do while waiting for them. :)

Love camping however, I can't say I have ever camped in the snow. Let's see those stoves man! Sounds like a pretty cool thing to collect.

I've been snowshoe backing - last trip was many years ago in the Eastern Sierras.

    It's time to go again...

Yeah I just snowshoe an area for my tent, then wait about 20 minutes. It really firms up. Lay my tarp, set up. Easy peasy.

I mostly bp in the Eastern Sierra, my vacations are usually spent doing that, last July I was solo in MT in Glacier NP, beat the wildfire out to my car. Can't post any stove pics until Monday, my home puter is slow and most of my pics are on the puter at my late moms place. Don't encourage me to post stove pics or talk about them. :) I always pack snow for a tent area.
