Calling all OBA experts....

So i have a question and I'm stretched to my limits.

This is a 120 psi tank. a 25% compressor and is rated for 150 psi and 10 minutes of continous use. The tank takes 2 min 30 sec to fill.

Is there any reason this could not inflate tires. There is several mentions of not being suitable for tire inflation on the viair Web site. But the internet says fine for 31s (on Amazon) I had 31s run the same psi as my 33s now. It doesn't make sense to me why it could not be used for inflation. Any ideas as to why?

The medium duty has a cluster gauge air hose chucks and a black box that I'm unsure of here. It's shown in the wiring diagram but not labled... any ideas?


The viair portable compressor is labeled for 33s is also a 25 % compressor. Any thoughts?

That black box is the pressure sensor that turns the compressor back on when you start using air out of the tank. Same thing as the one on a home air compressor.

 

So an automatic switch essentially. Not 100% necessary but the quarter duty says it has a pressure switch (im assuming that's the same thing?)

 

If you have a tank you have to have a way for the compressor to know when to come on. You also need a way for it to know when to shut off so it doesn't over pressurize the tank. Any system that comes with a tank will have the pressure sensor switch.

It is 100% necessary. What happens to a balloon if you keep blowing it up?

 

When tank pressure gets low and triggers the switch to cycle the compressor on, same thing.

 

That being said the smaller setup would have one then. Good analogy. Hahah

 

If you are going to be using it a lot you would probably be better off with the medium duty setup. Light duty is pretty much that. A 33" tire hold a good bit of air. Mine are at 45 psi and it takes a bit to get them there with small compressors or even the one's they have at gas stations.

 

My at3's are at 32psi (285 75 16)... It's 100$ more for the medium set up. I know buy once cry once. But it's a .5 gallon difference and the motor is still only running like 5 min for a filled tank.

 

Have you considered co2?

 

I have. Couple things pull me away... I like the idea of a hidden system. I live in an area where no one refills just tank swaps. The possibility of getting air lockers. And running tools on co2 scares me... I know it's doable with good oiled tools but still granted I couldn't run too many tools off a 120 psi tank but I'd be able to break bolts loose.

 

I have a 2 gallon air compressor (110 volt) and it takes a bit to fill tires with it. I'll have the output on it set at 80 psi and I burn through that tank quick. If you want it just for top off's then the light duty will probably be fine. If you are wanting to actually air up tires from off roading then I'd go with the medium duty if not more. Those prices are cheap from the last time I looked at them.

I don't know your situation but if it's a matter of $100 or even $200 I'd hold off until I could get something I knew would fit my needs. Talk with other owners of them and get real feedback on it. That way you buy once and are happy with your purchase and haven't wasted any money on something not fit for what you want.

For what it's worth, I air up my 33s every time with this dinky little twink of a compressor:




Don't spend too much time worrying about what the intrawebz tells ya.

Oh and guess what? I also use this as an air gun. Popped my caliper pistons out no prob, without it I couldn't have rebuilt my brakes. Food for thought amigo.

Don't forget you're going to have to buy or make something to mount it all also. Also going to need a pressure regulator for output from the tank. Yeah, I know, shit's not cheap to have onboard air.

My advice is make sure you sincerely have the need for this before buying it. There's other thing's you can buy for the Taco exterior that you could get and make the truck look really good.

But then again you probably don't want to listen to me. I buy shit all the time and it's expensive.
