'16 Tacoma- Avid side steps, LED interior lighting, yaesu ft-2900R VHF radio (KD8EHC), dog box, Garmin Alpha, Plott Hounds Wife's rig '12 Rav4 4x4 4cyl.... its a cupcake, but a damn good runner
It really seems like a good idea to used the GoPro mount, but my concern would be 1. your radio is damn near in direct sunlight, 2. how much weight will the GoPro mount hold? I run a Yaesu FT2900r which is kind of bulky/heavy. Just not so sure i'd want it dangling from my windshield on an whim.

A 2900r does not have a detachable faceplate. A radio with a detachable faceplate like a 7900r is what I am talking about. The main body of the radio could go behind the rear seat and be connected to the faceplate with a separation kit.

Gotcha! That would/should work out great then on the GP mount.

Yeah, I'm looking at running a ICOM 2730. Faceplate is small and removable. Both the mic and faceplate connect to the radio independently so only one wire needed to the remote mounting location. Been thinking about it more and maybe I can use a gopro mount just above the iq charge location, just out of sight. Faceplate can go on a printed mount still and be a little more conveniently placed.

I thought about that as well. How to anchor it is the question I had. Also difficult to get a wire to the area behind the panel. I ran a wire to a light bar switch I installed in a blank in the switch bezel just above that, and that was not easy to access.

I have a barely used FT-7900 that I'd sell if someone on here wanted it. Still have the original box.
I bought it, intending on using it as my main home rig, but decided to get an ID-880 since a lot of D-Star repeaters popped up nearby.
I'm probably going to install a ID-5100 Deluxe(also for the D-Star capabilities) in the Tacoma.

Still debating on antenna and mounting. Leaning towards NMO mount, but taking the headliner out and hearing stories of people ripping theirs out of the roof with low hanging branches makes me nervous.

Hey Strazz, I forgot to ask, how much of a nightmare is it to pull down the headliner to drill that NMO hole in the 2016?

It's pretty similar to a second gen. I removed all of the interior plastic touching the headliner but I probably would have been okay with just the driver's side. I wanted to be able to get a really good look to make sure I had enough room behind or above the sunroof.

Just got done a pretty long install of an ID-5100 into my 2016 Tacoma. DCSB, TRD-OR.
Ran 8G from battery back to the cubby behind the back seat. I haven't figured out where I'll be mounting the head yet. Mic comes up from under the driver's seat. 20160219_173253.jpg

I used a Diamond MR77. Dual band mag mount antenna- same one I have on my WRX. I know some guys on here will say "do it right, and drill", but I can't bring myself to drill, and I've never had any issues with mag mounts on my vehicles. Always good reception reports- heck I get surprised sometimes that I'm able to reach someone with the distance I am from them. I put down some 3M paint protection film under the antenna so it won't mess up the paint.
I'm probably just going to temporarily mount the head to a RAM flat surface mount and use my RAM suction cup to mount it on the windshield. I'm driving about 900 miles on Sunday, by myself, so I need something to entertain me. (Traveling from S-NJ to an hour north of Atlanta). I ordered a Lido cup holder mount, but apparently Lido is a one man show, and the guy can't figure out how to ship my order out in a timely manner- I ordered on the 15th, it has still yet to ship. He created the shipping label on the 16th, but USPS has not received it, meaning I will not get it before I leave. I work for USPS, so I know when it gets picked up, it gets a scan, and when it gets to the post office, it gets another scan, and when it goes through sorting facilities, it gets scans. There isn't any on it....
Either way, the guy has yet to reply to my e-mail from 3pm yesterday as well, inquiring as to why it hasn't actually been shipped out yet.

I ran 8G power wires because I do have a Kenwood TS-480SAT that I may install, eventually. I'd probably do a screwdriver antenna for that, but no idea how, yet.

Has anyone hooked up the Yaesu 7900r to a go pro mount? I would like to see how they made it work.

How much $ would you be asking for the FT7900r? and is it Frequency Modified?
