I know we are supposed to have 5 w-30, but one of my friends has a5 quart jug of Valvoline full synthetic in 10w30 that he doesn't want. He's only had it for a couple of months and it's never been opened. Should I put it in this spring? Would you?

No. Your engine was designed with clearances for 5w-30, 10w-30 may be too thick to provide proper lubrication.

    Dude*

I couldn't care less if he used it. I just don't understand the excitement over a free jug of incorrect oil.

    Oil is cheap.

The oil will be a little thicker at start up, but during the summer months that shouldn't matter. Once the engine is warmed up the viscosity is the same. I'd use it during the summer. JMO.

I run 10-30 or 10-40 in the summer and when I'm towing.....
    It will be fine....
    May reduce MPG just slightly....
Thinner oil has less resistance = better MPG and more HP but higher heat and shorter life
Thicker oil cools and lubricates better...

Honda switched to 0-20 and says you can go 7000+ miles oil changes but at 100,000 miles you need new pistons....
If you live in northern states change oil in your Toyota at 4000-5000 miles max...
If you just run to the mall and to work run thinner oil..
If you off road or tow run thicker oil or change it sooner....

I currently run 10-30 and change it at 3000 miles... But I may go back to 10-40 in the summer....

One can never have too many light bars.
It will be fine. Especially now that its warming up. Your oil pump might bitch a little while warming up but that should be the only drawback.

Thank you for the replies so far. It will be probably April before I change the oil, so it will be during warmer months....always above 60F. Dammit, it would be hard to turn down five quarts of full synthetic Valvoline. :)

Question is, are you willing to potentially damage your engine over $30, real or not?

You realize that every oil that marked Xw-30 has the same thickness at operating temps correct?

you also realize that your motors temp is nearly identical in the winter and in the summer once warmed up... switching to x-30 to x-40 in the summer actually hurts lubrication of your motor at temp as its thicker.

Also even 0w-30 at ambient temps of 75* is STILL thicker than a 30weight oil at operating temp. Meaning that even 0w-30 is still too thick to properly lube a cold motor. BUT it is MUCH MUCH thinner than 5 or 10w-30 when cold so it will protect your motor better during warm up and be the proper 30 weight during operating temps.

If you are running synthetic in your motor, there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON NOT TO RUN 0w-30. It offers better start up / warm up protection and possibly better mpgs. And for this reason i run 0w-30 all year round.... from 0*F to 120*F ambient.

OP it probably wouldnt hurt it, but use the 10w-30 in something else... lawn mower etc.

In your owners manual there should be a little chart type thing that will tell you a given oil for a temperature range. Check that.

    It's a quality product.

I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Doesn't mean you have to use it in your truck if you feel persnickety. (although it won't hurt a thing. part of the 5w side is to assist with MPG ratings)

You can use it in a beater. You can give it to someone with a beater who needs an oil change and it low on funds. You can use it in a vehicle that calls for that viscosity if you want.

So many options, many of which can do good for others.

    So yea, I'd take it.
