that is just one example, watson

my own company produces [won't name it] software suite which is pre-installed on 18x $225,000 server cores (24 cores x 18)
and can mine data and do the forensics and all the stuff the [insert corporate or govt entity here] and it is used by...let see, every big name
you can try to mention, including the biggest company on earth (378 billion of revenue, yearly)

anyone can buy time on these services (Amazon is one such place) and you pay a fee (subscribe) and go get your data mining done. when you have deep pockets you own the storage arrays the data is on (you are a cloud provider or own your own facility)

the trend lately is large corporations are buying cloud storage and letting the providers do the heavy lifting of the physical hardware and facility, and big data mining is tied into all this.

I know this stuff exists. will one dealership do this, probably no way. but does toyota corporate do this ? they do or they should...
again, whatever you want to look for (trends, purchasing trends, fraud trends, failure rates...anything)

so, just saying...once it is on the internets, it is collected, stored, and mined, forever.

That's fascinating stuff. I knew it existed, but had not thought of how valuable it really is to major corporations. Dealerships have data mining for their own stuff (social media, phone and internet traffic) but of course Toyota would be using tools like your software to pull data on just about everything. They could gauge the mindset of their market in an instant. Mind = blown.

Another member got new gears or third member etc replaced under warranty because he had a howl from the rear diff on decel around 55mph. It was a TRD sport. The service guys said the tollerances were too close or something. I guess a few sports have had this problem. Could that cause the diff to grenade?

I did nearly the same as OP in my 2009 after 4 months of ownership and diff did not explode.

I made the switch to a Frontier. It reminds me of an old Toyota the way everything is over built. The 4.0L engine is just excellent all around.

True, that this one incident does not indicate a problem with the whole model line. However, this problem and the other issues are why I never buy the first model year of anything.
Give the manufacture time to identify and work out any issues and make permanent corrections. I will trade up for the new Tacoma, but it will be in a year or two from now.

I have beat on my 2004 in the same (and Worse) desert environment and terrain without any issues or breakage to my stock drive train.

I believe that this is an isolated incident and a failure of the part, not the design. Just my opinion

I usually never by the first model year of anything as well but I'd be stupid to pass up the deal I was offered. At the same time I somewhat regret my decision of getting a first year with all the bugs not worked out

Ok here's the thing that concerns me . the 2nd gen had a 8.4" rear that was upgraded from the old 8" rear that would fail. Now Toyota went back to the old 8" but also have a new 8.7" for the off road locker and stick shift only. So I'm hoping the 8" was not a mistake to save money. So your new truck with more power and weight has a weaker rear than the older truck with less power.

I've seen a lot of Toyota commercials, and what you were doing doesn't come close to what they do in the commercial. If the dealer gave me grief for that repair, I'd just bring up one of their commercials on You Tube. Never saw a disclaimer saying "Not Intended Use"

So the sport and the OR have different diffs? It's not only the locker that is different?

They are the same size but are measured differently due to a backing plate around the OR ring gear

Depends on who you talk to, but not really. The OR will have the 8 inch e-locker and the Sport will have the 8.4 (still a 8 inch ring gear). Difference come into to play with the 8.4 having a stud girdle, 2 extra ring gear bolts, and a larger pinion shaft diameter as well if I'm not mistaken.

As far as the OP's situation I'm going to take a guess and say he was an unlucky one that got a diff setup improperly. Shit happens basically, parts will fail when you think they won't or won't when you think they should. I would love to see what the ring and pinion looked like when they pulled it apart.

There was another member who had his diff replaced due to excessive backlash.

I wouldn't classify that as beating on his truck. Obviously that's driving it harder than your grandpa would be down the street. he could of been stuck in snow or mud and the same result have occurred.

That being said. Is this concerning? Not really. Lot of people are making such a big deal about this. Until you start seeing a ton of these same videos or people posting similar stories it's not a big deal. Just seems as typical fluke part failure right now. This could happen to any truck any manufacture. But here it's going to be remembered as a "3rd gen problem" or "Gen 2.5 problem"

The real trolls are the people saying that crap MR. Moderator not the guy making a joke about the bunnies on the motorcycles

    Nuff said!
