    Quick details:
I've got a 2016 double Cab manual transmission Tacoma with the factory backup Camera.

    What I want to do:
Add a rocker switch to the dash so I can toggle the backup camera on and off at any time while driving or stopped at a red light WITHOUT putting the transmission in reverse.

    Question:
Has anyone done this yet or know how to do this, or have advice on how to go about this?

This is possible, I just can't find any information on it as most owners install aftermarket reverse cameras. I do not want to go this route on a brand new truck that has a perfectly functioning reverse camera.

As I understand it, I should simply need to splice into the reverse gear switch that turns on the backup camera.

Neat idea! I'd like that option too. Mine isn't in yet, but when it is I'll collaborate with you to see if we can create a clean and easy modification.

Tap into the reverse light wire in the harness running to the back or tap into the reverse light in the tail light housing. It has nothing to do with the reverse gear or transmission itself.

Wiring diagram below. I set up my Jeep with an AEV reverse light and the hot wire of the camera into the reverse light. Use a 3 position switch.reverselights.jpgDAP-20100417-142929.jpg

Excellent, thank you for the reply Rising Eagle. I'll have my electrician friend help me with this up. Not sure when I'll have this mod completed but it's on my immediate to do list. I'll check back on this thread and update as I go. I'll get ad many pictures as I can so I don't miss any details for you guys

I don't know about toyota, but most manufacturers aren't using a reverse signal wire any more to trigger the camera. The radio looks for reverse signal on the data line. When it see the signal, it turns on the camera and displays the image

I'd like to do this to my '16 SR-5, but what I need is the relevant page from the wiring diagram that shows the color codes for the reverse line to the camera. I can find +12V easily enough, and I've got a SPDT switch, so I won't need a relay.

Anyone have the wiring diagram or can describe how to find the wire I'm looking for?
