Starting to regret I ever purchased this truck....

I will probably be the scorn of this site after this post, but this is really how I feel. I am starting to regret purchasing this truck and it has less than 700 miles on it.

First issue, the constant shifting of gears on the most subtle of inclines. This vehicle is constantly searching for the right gear in this situation. It is frustrating....

Second, the trip meter resets itself nearly every time I get in and out of the car. That is important because I use the trip meter all the time to keep track of mileage when I make deliveries for a small business I own. The mileage is tax deductible. These resets have already caused a problem.

Third, I am now having trouble getting the Navigation link to work. When I enter the Nav screen, there is the option of entering an address. This button/link/option is not active and I cannot get it to activate. I can get around this by using voice commands to enter an address. This is not very efficient, as my foreign accent limits this.

Fourth, I cannot access the phone dial pad to enter a phone number. Again, I can speak the numbers, but my accent limits the effectiveness of this also.

I paid over $40K for the limited model, because I like gadgets and I use them whenever I can. Finding that some are not working is a major issue. In addition to that, the closest dealership is just over 100 miles away and they have a terrible reputation for service. As a matter of fact, they lost one of their franchises because of this. The next closest is 220 miles.

I have always been a Nissan guy. I have had tremendous luck with their products over the last 15 years. My wife and I get new vehicles every two to three years, so I've owned a lot of them over that time. This is the first Toyota I have owned and I'm already having more issues than in all the other vehicles combined. I will admit that there are a lot of options on this truck that previous vehicles I owned did not have, but really, to go wrong so fast.

I purchases this Tacoma because I really like the styling and reputation, at least the reputation I read about prior to buying. I always research a vehicle extensively before purchasing it. All arrows indicated that I could not go wrong with this vehicle.

Maybe this post is to complain more than anything, but now I have to take the time to drive a lot of miles to have things repaired that never should have gone wrong on a new vehicle with less than a thousand miles.

#3 and #4 are not thing that have gone wrong or need to be fixed. The options you mention being greyed out are not a bug or fault, that is how they are designed as a safety feature. If you are in motion, you can only enter addresses and phone numbers by voice. Works well for me but I can see how it could be an issue with a foreign accent.

Have you done the voice learning feature? If not, I would highly recommend it as it helps the computer learn your style of speaking and improves accuracy a ton.

You can manually enter those things when stopped (or in park... I can't remember which)

Are you trying to dial and enter addresses while driving? Some features on entune are only available while at a stop that way you're paying attention to the road. This is a safety feature, not a malfunction. Also, the gear shifting lessens as you break the truck in.

1st year of a new gen there are bound to be quirks and issues. Maybe some of our other forum members can help you out with their experiences with the navigation issues and tranny issues

Thanks to the few of you that have already offered quick fix solutions. To the rest of you asses, who's only intelligent comment is to sell it. Yeah, I'll get right on that. Do you know how much of a loss I will take? There is no way in hell I can sell it and take a 5K loss. Plus, what do I tell the next person. I cannot lie and tell them everything is great. I'm not that person. I posted this mostly to complain and secondly to get suggestions. And to high n mighty, thank you for not noticing my foreign accent.

Man 90% of the issue is you!!! Why don't you learn how to use the features of the truck. The time it took you to bitch about this you have have watch a few YouTube videos to help learn the nav system.

Yep, some owners have a steeper learning curve than others. As for the shifting, it DOES begin to smooth out over time but if it's still not to your liking, turn the ECT on or select a gear in manual.

Some people have no control over being twatwaffles. Don't worry about it man, I know you are airing your frustrations and would like a little advice along the way. You have every right to post what you have. Sorry for the frustrations.

Having read a lot of the '16 threads, it sounds like you are not the only one to have some of these issues... Hopefully Toyota can make it right for you. Sorry for your luck.

OP, I also have the shifting issues ... mostly on cruise ...and only get 16mpg. I have 9000 miles, and wait patiently for an update. The shifting will get WAY better after a few thousand "learning" miles.

The nav is different than other vehicles, and most things like configs for maps and phones are only configurable when the vehicle is parked.

I try and look at the positive things I love about my Taco.

The 4x4 high clearance, the look, style, and reputation for reliability. Your Taco may have a few hiccups right now, but Toyota warranty seems outstanding. I am 40 miles from closest dealer and next is 75 miles and both are in the OPPOSITE direction from work.

Now that you have said a few concerns, what are some of the great things on your Taco?

First complaint, it settles down after around 1000 miles or so
    Second complaint, no idea.
Third and Fourth Complaint, sounds like your trying to drive and enter an address or dial a phone number, safety regulations do not allow this.

YOu need to use the iGnore function to rid yourself of the assholes in the thread. Thats a good start. Assholes will always be assholes. You won't be missing anything. Most of them don't even want or own a Gen 3.

I promise you if you start using the ignore function, this forum is much better and dispenses with the jerks. I am on 57 ignored and I don't feel like I am missing anything important.

Secondly Read the Manual..The Entune System has a couple of reference booklets, I think you will find answers to some of your questions and much more cool tech in the manuals. The transmission seemed OK to me.. I understand its is trying to keep around 1100 RPM. So it shifts too early for some. ECT takes care of that,

BTW the Tacoma is in demand and many are paying MSRP or close. IF you decide to sell it I would bet you will lose $3000 at most. I sold my 15 to get a 16 and that was my number.....I DID add another $3000 for Premium and tech w JBL but I did not have that before.

Just my .02 OP, just read on another thread one or two members+ have brought their automatics back to the dealer to have the shifting issue corrected as it seems quite a few are having the same problem. Paraphrasing here, but dealer either added more transmission fluid or re-flashed/mapped which seemed to help fix the issue. While others have mentioned over time transmission starts to learn your driving habits and the problem goes away....
If it were mine, I'd persue these steps before selling. All your other issues seem minor, but the transmission shifting all the time would be bothersome/deal breaker.

OP, the shifting calms down after a couple thousand miles but if you've got the tow package your truck is almost a quart low on ATF. Topping off the ATF to the proper level will also improve shifting.

As you know from reading this thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/uninitiated-trip-meters-reset.399689/
the trip meter resetting problem seems headed for a resolution. You should call Toyota (not your dealer) and start a case file for this problem.
