I have a 2014 Tacoma with 46K miles. One day last week I started it up to go to work and the Check Engine Light and the Trac Off light came on immediately. I started to leave and see noticed it had no power. I called the Dealership. After not hearing from them for a day, I called to see what was going on. After not getting any answers for 3 days, they informed me the Secondary Injection pump failed, and it will cost me $1200 to fix it.

After researching this matter more I found that the exact problem has plagued the Tundras and Sequoias since 2005. In fact Toyota Motors extended the warranty to 7yr/70000 Miles on these parts in States that had required Emission Controls similar to California. My home state of Maine is one such state.

I have contacted Toyota Motors and opened up a case file. After not hearing back from them in 48 hours as they promised I called back to find that the matter has been brought to the dealers attention. Now another 48 hours later nothing is being done!

Has any one else on this Forum experience the same problem? If so i would be glad to hear from you.

UPDATE! Toyota Motors has agreed to repair the truck at no charge. They also ask that any other Tacoma owners having this same issue contact them and open a case. If enough Tacomas exhibit the same problem, they will repair them under an extended warranty condition. The number to call is 1-800-331-4331

Its a pain, but I bet if you take it apart, you can clean up the pump. Tundra owner here and I know all about these systems. I don't understand why The Tacoma's are not warranted as well. Its the same system.

many people have had issues. Usually due to moisture / deterioration of the foam filter inside the pump clogging the valves.

I just recently put a 1inch UNI breather on the intake of the pump, and removed the internal foam filter, mitigating any possibility of the foam degrading and effing the pump up.

OP make a HARD case that this is only on the truck for emissions reasons and should fall under the 8 year 80k federal warranty. Keep on them, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, pound them with tsb's and recalls from the similar systems on other affected trucks (both toyota and lexus products have this issue)

My 2012 Tacoma got that issue at 17k miles. check this link about my case https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/p2442-limp-mode-air-injection-pump.406905/page-3
I think you should keep contacting with Toyota Headquarter customer service. I had to spend 2 weeks deal with them and checked them every 2-3 days. They will more helpful than your local dealership.
while waiting Toyota Customer services, you can ask your friend or run to Auto shop and buy the clear code device ($15-$30) to reset the Engine light. After clear the code your truck will have power back and can drive normal. You may do that every morning when you start your truck ( or maybe every 3-4 days).

The main purpose of the air injection pump is to help burn off the rich fuel vapors when to engine is running cold, and right after it shuts down. For the Toyota Tacomas warranty covers only 3 years/36K miles. It's a money maker, as the Tacomas get older more are going to fail and they'll be more of a demand for part suppliers to provide replacement parts. There's one that even supplies a by pass kit, but the system has to be in working order. https://www.hewitt-tech.com/store/

Anyway to delete this system without having a Christmas tree light up on your dash after its removed?

The ECU is looking for it when you start the engine, to make sure it's functional. If not it flashes a code and a light comes up on the dash. Ignore it long enough your engine will go into the lump mode, eventually the hot exhaust gasses will damage other parts of the engine. Worse case, possibly causing an engine fire. https://www.hewitt-tech.com/store/ Does supply parts and also a by pass kit, to fool the ECU. I saw somewhere someone had posted from the Tundra forum, then on this Tacoma site about a cheap DIY by pass system. It involves a relay and a diode. No one actually has tried and wired it up on a Tacoma yet. I'll look for the discussion, but someone needs to be the guinea pig. The bad, you could possibly damage the ECU and that's $$$!

I opened up mine just to see what was inside. After finding out how much this thing costs I asked myself whether it could possibly be rebuilt. Don't know but it did not appear to be very complicated.

I have a question, I have a 13 DCSB does anyone hear this pump turn on when you start the truck, it will run for a 1minute or so and then shuts off, at least I don't hear it any more. It also turns on for about 10 second after I turn the truck off. Is this normal??

That's great if he has installed it, on the Tacoma. Would like to know what wires he taped into.

I just installed the Hewitt-Tech kit on my 2012. The wires connect to the mass air flow sensor, and one to the starter relay. Not wanting to cut into my factory harness, I picked up a MAF extension harness from URD, and spliced it into that. The starter relay in the fuse box, I have the wire wrapped around the blade of the relay, then reinstalled the relay, so no actual modifications to the factory stuff.

I also did the SAIS pump replacement pack (really easy to do), and have driven around for one day so far with no air pump hooked up without any codes.

I also installed Hewitt-Tech bypass kit 7/15 works well. There's another DIY by-pass option on the cheap someone else has posted.

I just had this same failure 2 wks ago, my truck has 53k on it. Good luck trying to get Toyota to cover anything regarding this component. I am still fighting them for reimbursement, I tried the emissions warranty and under that they tell me this part is only covered for 2/24k. the part is very esy to install, the dealer is ripping people off at $1300, that's the same price I was quoted as well. After being jerked around by Toyota I found the part for $470 and installed in 30 min, I had a truck I could drive again.

Only way around this system is to bypass, one member is working on the fix posted above. If we don't bypass it looks like we will be repacing these parts every 50k.

I heard these pumps were identical swaps off GM 2001 Chevy S10, with the exception of possible connections. In which you most likely have to rob the OEM Toyota connection install it on the new Chevy air injection pump. http://www.partsgeek.com/62pm6gr-ch...m_term=Chevrolet+Secondary+Air+Injection+Pump

I have heard that about the pumps as well, but what's going bad on ours is the switching valves. From what I have seen they are Toyota only, would be great if we could find a way to rebuild them.
